1) Netanyahu runs the war as caretaker PM, no government forms, and any repeat election slips: 35% chance. A caretaker government can legally wage war, and coalition talks stall when the country is under missile fire. Netanyahu doesnโt have to win anything. He only has to keep the clock running.
2) An emergency unity government with Netanyahu โfor the duration of the warโ: 25% chance. The model is Gantz in 2020, who broke his โno Netanyahuโ pledge and joined a COVID emergency government. Eisenkot was a war-cabinet observer in 2023 and frames everything in terms of national security.
3) It backfires, Likud drops Netanyahu, and a unity government forms without him: 15% chance. The security chiefs are already leaking that Netanyahu pushed for pre-election escalation. If a war starts and Zamirโs side leaks again, the manipulation charge becomes the story. That gives Likud MKs a reason to drop him in exchange for staying in power.
4) Netanyahu forms a right-wing government with defectors: 12% chance. War rhetoric helps him peel off one or two MKs, but the gap from 50 is still too wide.
5) An Eisenkot minority government backed by Raโam: 10% chance. Depending on Arab parties during a war with Iran is the attack Netanyahu would most want to make. It also hardens Liberman and Bennett against the option.
6) The Haredim cross over to Eisenkot: 3% chance. Wartime pressure on the draft makes a deal on exemptions even less likely.
The upshot of this is that it is about a 70% chance that Netanyahu remains in power, weakened and battered and temporary, but more dangerous than ever as a result.

Israeli Mossad agents kidnapped Mordechai Vanunu in Rome in September 1986.
Vanunuโs Moroccan Jewish family immigrated to Israel when he was a child. After serving in the Army, he worked at the Negev Nuclear Research Center from 1976 until 1985, suspected by many around the world to house a secret Israeli nuclear weapons program.
While simultaneously pursing a college degree, he became active in student politics, including pro-Palestinian causes. He was warned by his superiors to cease his outside activities but did not.
In 1985, Vanunu took photos of the complex, including clear evidence of nuclear weapons development. Undiscovered, he then moved to Australia, where he converted to Christianity.
The following year, he offered the photos and story to a reporter from Londonโs Sunday Times, among others. His information was deemed credible, and he was flown to London for more interviews, where he was sequestered for many days in a hotel, while the story was corroborated and readied for publication.
Unbeknownst to anyone, a friend of Vanunuโs had also sold the story to the Sunday Mirror, owned by Robert Maxwell, a former Mossad officer and father of Ghislaine Maxwell.
In late September, Vanunu suddenly disappeared from London. He had struck up a relationship with an Israeli-American female Mossad agent posing as a tourist named Cindy. She convinced him to take a short trip to Rome with her, where he was captured, drugged, and smuggled back to Israel via ship.
While being transported in a van to court in late 1986, Vanunu wrote a message to camera crews on his hand, which read, โVanunu M was hijacked in Rome ITL. 30.9.86. 21.000. Came to Rome by fly BA504.โ
The Sunday Times published the story on Israelโs nuclear arsenal just days after his disappearance, and Vanunu was convicted of treason, serving 18 years before his release in 2004. Afterwards he was prohibited from leaving Israel and had continued legal troubles.
The American Mossad agent โCindyโ returned to the US, where she reportedly began a new career as a real estate agent in Orlando, FL.
