Two men built it. Tony Lyons, the publisher who prints RFK Jr.'s books. And Mark Gorton, the Wall Street quant who created LimeWire, the file-sharing app a federal court shut down for mass copyright infringement. Their money now underwrites the health movement.

Kennedy registered the MAHA trademark, earned $100,000 in licensing fees off it, then handed the mark to a Wyoming LLC run by Del Bigtree for no compensation. The slogan is a brand with a paid history. That is the tell.

Operational control of the health department has moved out of Kennedy's hands. Chris Klomp, the Medicare official who wrote Trump's drug-pricing deals, now runs day-to-day operations and is nominated as the department's number two.

Kennedy's original circle got pushed down. His gatekeeper and his chief of staff both lost their reach. He keeps the microphone and his signature fights. He no longer controls the machinery. He is most of the way to a figurehead.

His base has turned on him. Glyphosate, the food loophole, the mRNA shots. On each one the movement's demands went unmet. In June, medical-freedom activists sent him an open letter accusing him of a bait and switch. They warned that MAHA voters can walk away.

So can he win the base back if he runs in 2028? Every path has a cost. The most tempting is an anti-war pivot. The essay lays out why it is also the most dangerous, and why he probably cannot run it from inside Trump's cabinet.

A viral Substack claim says Elon Musk funded MAHA with $6 million. The filings say $3 million, and it went to a pro-Trump turnout PAC, not the movement's health agenda. The real story is smaller, and more interesting, than the one going around.

Under super PAC law, a presidential run pays the operators whether or not it wins. The MAHA apparatus is a campaign held in escrow, waiting for a resignation letter. Winning may not be the point. The campaign is the product.

This is the view from inside Washington, and it has limits. It reads org charts well and grassroots faith badly. The capital sees a fading official. The movement sees a fighter under siege. The Beltway has misjudged Kennedy before.

Slow. Patient. Relentless.

A familiar method:
Change institutions first.
Politics follows.

James Lindsay argues that socialism largely lost the economic argument and reinvented itself around social justice.
The battlefield clearly shifted from ownership of factories to equity, while the governance of institutions was the real goal.

This doesn't require a conspiracy.

We spent the last day reviewing thousands of pages from Senator Rand Paul's COVID-19 Reading Room, using AI to analyze congressional testimony, emails, and private Slack messages.
The documents don't prove a lab origin.
But they destroy the myth that the science was ever settled.

The biggest revelation comes from Dr. Ralph Baric, arguably the world's leading coronavirus researcher.
When asked about DARPA's PREEMPT proposal, Baric didn't mince words:
"That's a gain-of-function experiment. There's no other way to think about it."
Years of semantic games ended in one sentence.

Baric also confirmed that the DEFUSE proposal called for inserting a furin cleavage site into SARS-like bat coronaviruses—and that his UNC lab would have performed that work.
DARPA rejected DEFUSE.
It appears that substantially similar experiments later proceeded under other federal funding.

Perhaps the most surprising testimony:
Baric told Congress he had unpublished experiments showing that stronger ACE2 binding does not necessarily make a virus more successful.
He informed NIH.
He says he destroyed the viruses.
He never published the work.
Yet this research directly undercuts one of Proximal Origin's central scientific arguments.

The private Slack messages are equally revealing.
Kristian Andersen, the lead author of Proximal Origin paper, did not become more certain.
He became less certain.
Privately, he wrote he was "moving much more toward the middle" and later acknowledged that both natural and laboratory origins remained plausible.

Meanwhile, the authors continued privately debating:
• Furin cleavage sites • Tissue culture adaptation • Host-range experiments • EcoHealth grants • Wuhan Institute research
The internal scientific debate never ended.
Only the public debate did.

Baric also confirmed sending his NIH-funded human ACE2 mouse model to Shi Zhengli's laboratory in Wuhan.
The mice themselves weren't gain-of-function.
But they were specifically designed as the platform for gain of function experiments involving reverse genetics, engineered mutations, serial passage, and testing enhanced viral properties.

The documents also shine new light on USAID's PREDICT program.
Presented as virus surveillance, PREDICT built the international pipeline that collected, sequenced, cataloged, and shared thousands of SARS-like bat coronaviruses through partners including EcoHealth Alliance and the Wuhan Institute of Virology.
The very viruses that were used in the gain of function research at Wuhan and perhaps at Baric's own lab in the USA.
This program was funded by USAID.
