In one of the most horrific examples of enforcing what is called โmorality,โ Saudi Arabiaโs Committee for the Promotion of Virtue and the Prevention of Vice prevented girls from escaping their burning school building in Mecca in 2002, on the grounds that they were not wearing the hijab and abaya while trying to flee.
The fire resulted in the deaths of 15 students, and the incident revealed the deadly consequences of prioritizing Islamic dress codes over the most basic human rightsโsuch as the right to life and safety.
