Heavy clashes erupted in Mexico recently, following the tragic assassination of independent mayor Carlos Manzano. Manzano was a vocal critic of the rising influence of organized crime and drug cartels in his region.

Manzano had consistently called for enhanced security measures from President Claudia Sheinbaum, urging her to take decisive action against the cartels that threaten public safety.

In response Sheinbaum stated that going to war against the cartels is not an option.

His courageous stance against the cartels made him a target, ultimately leading to his death.
