The disgraced former BBC newsreader sent cash to a convicted paedophile who supplied him with images of child sex abuse, a court has been told Monday.

Edwards is being sentenced at Westminster Magistrates’ Court for accessing indecent images of children as young as seven which were sent to him by Alex Williams, who was subsequently convicted of child sex offences.

Ian Hope, prosecuting, said Edwards had been determined to be of “medium” risk of reoffending.

Describing the detainees as “mercenaries,” Diosdado Cabello, Venezuela’s interior minister, claimed that the CIA was “leading the operation” and that 400 rifles had been seized.

“[The detainees] contacted French mercenaries, they contacted mercenaries from Eastern Europe and they are in an operation to try to attack our country,” Cabello said.

The US State Dept confirmed that an American military member was in Venezuelan custody, and noted “unconfirmed reports” that two additional US citizens had been detained.

However, Washington dismissed the accusations that the CIA planned to assassinate Maduro.

Israel’s defense minister, Yoav Gallant, informed Lloyd Austin Monday that the possibility for an “agreed framework in the northern arena” is running out.

Gallant blamed Hezbollah’s ongoing position of “tying itself” to fellow Iran-backed group, Hamas.

“The trajectory is clear,” Gallant told his US counterpart - indicating Israel will inflict war on Lebanon in an attempt to stop the barrage of rockets and drones targeting the northern part of the country.
