The Irish govt has shelved contentious provisions in its hate crimes bill after accusations they would have a chilling effect on free speech and an Irish senate revolt over the definition of gender.

Critics had suggested legislation could have been used to jail opponents of transgender women using female changing rooms or toilets.

Helen McEntee, the Irish justice minister, had previously blamed “deliberate misinformation and distortion, including from fringe commentators and US-based social media personalities,” for the controversy.

💲 US Manufacturing Slumps to 15-Month Low as Inflation Reaccelerates

America’s manufacturing sector saw its sharpest contraction in over a year in September, even as overall business activity growth remained robust, data showed.

The S&P Global US Manufacturing PMI slumped to 47.0 in September, down from August’s 47.9 and the lowest in 15 months.

Index readings below 50 represent a contraction in activity.

The US falls deeper into recession territory.

❌ Israel’s far-right Finance Minister Smotrich rejects proposal for 21-day ceasefire in Lebanon - calls for the “crushing” of Hezbollah

“The campaign in the north should end with a single result: crushing Hezbollah and elimination of its ability to harm the residents of the north,” Bezalel Smotrich said on X.

Adding that the ceasefire proposed by the US and its allies would give Hezbollah time to “reorganize.”

⛩ Japan Acquits Man after 46 Years on Death Row

A set of blood-stained trousers found in a tank of miso in 1967 sealed a young Iwao Hakamada’s destiny as the world’s longest serving death row inmate.

But on Thursday, former professional boxer Hakamada, now 88, was finally acquitted by a Japanese court of the murder of his boss, the man’s wife and their two teenage children.

Hakamada was too fragile to attend the hearing in person, but his sister bowed in thanks to the judge who declared her brother “innocent” after a miscarriage of justice spanning more than five decades.

In March 2014, the Shizuoka court granted him a retrial after DNA evidence surfaced which questioned the reliability of his conviction and raised the possibility that prosecutors could have planted evidence.
