The severing of two undersea fibre-optic comms cables in the Baltic Sea must be seen as an act of sabotage, although it is still unclear who is responsible, German defense minister Boris Pistorius said Tuesday.
“No one believes that these cables were cut accidentally. I also don’t want to believe in versions that these were anchors that accidentally caused damage over these cables,” Pistorius said before a meeting with EU defense ministers in Brussels.
The cables had linked Lithuania and Sweden, plus Finland and Germany.

The move will see around 900k undocumented migrants arrive as Spain seeks to expand its labor force, Migration Minister Elma Saiz told reporters Tuesday.
“Spain has to opt between being an open, prosperous country or being a closed and poor one, and we have chosen the former,” Saiz said, adding that the nation needs around 250,000 to 300,000 tax-paying foreign workers a year to sustain its welfare state.
57% of Spaniards believe there is “too much” immigration, while 54% perceive that the proportion of migrants is higher than the official level of foreign-born residents in Spain, a survey by El Pais conducted last month found.

"The ICBL condemns this terrible decision by the US. The US Campaign to Ban Landmines and all the ICBL will be working to get the US to reverse it." Ukraine "must clearly state they cannot and will not accept these weapons," the International Campaign to Ban Landmines told AFP.
More than 160 countries have signed an international treaty banning their use, noting that the indiscriminate weapons can cause enduring harm to civilians.

🇧🇷🇺🇦 G20 Summit Declaration in Rio Addresses Ukraine in a Single Paragraph
The final declaration of the G20 summit in Rio has been published, with only one paragraph dedicated to the Ukraine conflict.
According to Financial Times, some European countries pushed for stronger wording, but there was reluctance to go too far, as this could have led to conflicts and no declaration at all.
Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, who hosted the summit, released the declaration a day earlier than planned to end debates over Ukraine, angering European leaders, Reuters reports. Traditionally, the communiqué is published at the summit's conclusion, but Lula approved the text during Monday’s closing plenary session, while leaders from France, Germany, and the U.S. were absent.
German Chancellor Olaf Scholz and French President Emmanuel Macron publicly expressed their dissatisfaction to journalists.
Sources suggest Brazil feared it might fail to secure agreement on any resolution during its home summit.
This year’s G20 declaration devotes seven times less space to Ukraine compared to last year.

The final declaration of the G20 summit in Rio has been published, with only one paragraph dedicated to the Ukraine conflict.
"Regarding the war in Ukraine, and referencing discussions in New Delhi, we emphasize the impact of human suffering and the additional negative consequences of the war on global food and energy security, supply chains, macro-financial stability, inflation, and economic growth. We welcome all relevant and constructive initiatives that contribute to establishing a comprehensive, just, and lasting peace in line with all the Goals and Principles of the UN Charter, aimed at promoting peaceful, friendly, and good-neighborly relations among nations," the statement reads.
