CNN reports that Ukrainian Army are not ready for a significant new Russian offensive on Kharkov, describing the situation as close to catastrophic and a potential turning point in the conflict. Russian forces have launched a major assault, and Ukraine, caught off guard, lacks sufficient fortifications. Ukrainian troops have “repositioned to more advantageous positions”, which is essentially a retreat. Russia has mobilized its resources, shifted its economy to a wartime footing, and boosted its manpower, while Ukraine struggles with low morale and delayed financial aid. The gravity of the situation has led President Zelensky to cancel urgent visits to allies, underscoring the dire circumstances.
