Dozens dead as violent anti-quota protests rock Bangladesh

WARNING: Distressing Images

Footage appears to show police parading dead bodies to onlooking rioters.

At least 39 people have died and hundreds more have been injured amid the escalating violence.

The students are demanding the govt scraps its preferential hiring rules for prestigious civil service jobs.

The most contentious aspect of the quota system is the reservation of 30% of posts for children of freedom fighters - who fought in the country's 1971 liberation war against Pakistan.

China suspended negotiations with the United States on arms control and nuclear non-proliferation, accusing Washington of selling American weapons to Taiwan - Chinese Foreign Ministry Speaker Lin Jian

"In recent weeks and months, despite China's strong opposition and repeated protests, the US has continued to sell arms to Taiwan and done things that seriously undermine China's core interests and mutual trust between China and the US,"

- the Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman said.

State Department spokesman Miller called China's decision "unfortunate." But he said that Washington will continue to strengthen the security of allies and partners in the region in the face of Chinese threats.

“China has decided to follow Russia's lead in arguing that engagement in arms control cannot continue when there are other challenges in the bilateral relationship. We believe that this approach undermines strategic sustainability. This increases the risk of arms race dynamics,”

- Miller said.

Trump to Call Zelensky – CNN

The call - scheduled for Friday - would mark their first conversation since the former US president left the White House in 2021 and comes amid growing Western concern that Trump will curb support for Kiev in November.

While attending the European Political Community UK summit, Zelensky said that Trump returning to the White House would be “hard work.”

Referring to Ukraine’s position on JD Vance, Trump’s pick for vice-president, Zelensky told the BBC: “Maybe he really doesn’t care, but we have to work with the United States.”
