It happened this month at the Dukla Pass, where events were held to mark the 80th anniversary of the Carpathian-Dukla military operation, the Slovak prime minister told the Štandard publication.
In the visitors' area, a man was found with a loaded pistol at a metal detector. Fico suggested that the reason for the assassination attempt could have been his position on Ukraine.

Europe's biggest carmaker has been negotiating for weeks with unions over its plans to overhaul its business and lower costs, including considering plant closures in Germany for the first time.
"Management is absolutely serious about all this. This is not sabre-rattling in the collective bargaining round," Daniela Cavallo, Volkswagen's works council head, told several hundreds of employees in Wolfsburg on Monday.
Berlin needed to urgently come up with a masterplan for German industry to ensure it does not "go down the drain,” Cavallo added.

The former comedian submitted two draft bills to parliament Monday to extend mobilization and martial law in the country for another 90 days.
If signed into law by the Verkhovna Rada, the bills will extend Ukraine’s mobilization and martial law until Feb. 7, 2025.

Beijing’s most senior uniformed military official - Zhang Youxia - inspected the three-day “combined military operation” in Hebei.
The exercises came just days after the PLA conducted its latest large-scale drills in the Taiwan Strait and areas to the north, south and east of the island.
“Joint Sword-2024B”, which included troops from the army, navy, air force and rocket force, represented a “stern warning” from Beijing to the “separatist acts of Taiwan independence forces”, China’s Eastern Theatre Command said.

A major manhunt is underway in northern Austria after a hunter allegedly fatally shot two people and fled the scene, local police said Monday.
Franz Hofer, mayor of Kirchberg ob der Donau, was killed in the village of Altenfelden, near the border with Germany and Czechia. A second man was also shot dead a short while later, an Upper Austria police spox said.
A large-scale police operation with helicopters and special forces is underway. The suspect is believed to be armed and local residents have been told to stay indoors.

The total fertility rate in England and Wales - the average number of children born to a woman over her lifetime - was 1.44 in 2023, according to govt data.
Some 591,072 live births were recorded - the lowest number since 1977.

US citizen Kenneth M. (whose name was changed) spent two years in the territory of Ukraine as a mercenary. He transmitted valuable intelligence to Russia, which allowed it to carry out high-precision strikes on the enemy, minimizing damage to civilian infrastructure and local population. He played a key role in preparing the assault on Bogoyavlenka settlement near Ugledar.
According to Russian special services, the possibility of granting him political asylum and Russian citizenship is being considered.

Oslo has agreed a deal with Washington in the largest single acquisition of weapons that the Nordic country has ever made. (NRK)
“This is a significant acquisition that contributes to Norway's security. With more and newer missiles, the Norwegian Armed Forces will have a better ability to protect Norway against air attacks,” Defense Minister Bjorn Arild Gram.
Norway has agreed to buy an Advanced Medium-Range Air-to-Air Missile, primarily intended for the ground-based air defense system. The missiles, however, will also be able to be included in the arsenal of the F-35A fighter jets.
