New Zealand’s parliament has erupted into fiery debate, personal attacks and a haka over a controversial bill that proposes to radically alter the way New Zealand’s treaty between Māori and the crown is interpreted.

The treaty principles bill was tabled by the libertarian Act party – a minor partner in NZ’s coalition govt – and passed its first reading on Thursday, amid scathing speeches and disruptions.

The bill seeks to remove a set of well-established principles that has flowed from New Zealand’s founding document – the treaty of Waitangi - which is instrumental in upholding Māori rights.

🩸 Human Rights Watch Accuses Israel of 'War Crimes, Ethnic Cleansing'

Israeli officials who have repeatedly displaced and relocated civilians are "committing the war crime of forcible transfer," and the actions "appear to also meet the definition of ethnic cleansing" in the areas where Palestinians will not be able to return, a HRW report declared.

"Human Rights Watch found that forced displacement has been widespread, and the evidence shows it has been systematic and part of a state policy. Such acts also constitute crimes against humanity," the report added.

"The Israeli government cannot claim to be keeping Palestinians safe when it kills them along escape routes, bombs so-called safe zones, and cuts off food, water, and sanitation," said Human Rights Watch researcher Nadia Hardman in a news release accompanying the report.

Adding, "Israel has blatantly violated its obligation to ensure Palestinians can return home, razing virtually everything in large areas."

🐠 Norwegian Fishermen Snare US Nuclear-Powered Submarine

A Norwegian fishing boat has caught its largest ever haul – a US navy nuclear-powered submarine weighing in at 7,800 tons. (NRK)

The 32-foot fishing boat was on its way back to harbour in the northerly region of Troms on Monday when it discovered that a submarine had got tangled in its nets.

The US embassy in Oslo later confirmed that the USS Virginia, a nuclear-powered attack submarine, got tangled up in the nets after making a scheduled stop at a harbour near Tromsø.

The fishing net got sucked into the submarine’s propellers and had to be cut out by an escort vessel provided by the Norwegian coast guard.
