The argument that Bitcoin inherently leads to hyper-compliance and control is fundamentally flawed when understood in the context of its true potential. Bitcoin, as originally envisioned, is not about static addresses where every transaction is easily traced. It’s a system designed for dynamic interaction, where transactions are granular—like handing over individual coins, not showing a ledger of every transaction linked together.

In a properly functioning Bitcoin network, each transaction can be as small as a dollar’s worth, exchanged directly between parties, effectively mimicking the transfer of physical cash. Imagine trying to track each individual coin, not by its origin in some monolithic account but by each instance of its transfer. Every time a transaction occurs, it’s like a brand-new instance of exchange, a transfer of ownership that severs the traceable chain. This is how Bitcoin can be designed for privacy without obscuring legitimacy—each piece exchanged is separate, like grains of sand rather than blocks of cement.

Consider a world where this happens a million times per second. The scale of transactions would be so vast and diverse that the notion of tracking every transaction becomes absurdly impractical. The power is in the protocol's ability to process this flood of transactions while maintaining direct IP-to-IP exchanges, utilizing Simplified Payment Verification (SPV). This enables a streamlined, lightweight system that doesn't require every participant to keep records of everything—a stark departure from the centralized notions of oversight and control.

The reality is that with Bitcoin’s design, it’s not about building a world of compliant cogs under surveillance; it’s about enabling a flood of microtransactions, each too small and too numerous to be effectively monitored or controlled in the manner imagined by those with a paranoia of oversight. While BTC may have been twisted into a form where every movement is scrutinized, true Bitcoin facilitates a landscape where the focus is on speed and scale, not constant surveillance. The idea that this leads to control misses the point entirely: a network where even purchasing a thousand-pound item is done with a mosaic of tiny, separate transactions is a network designed to resist the very nature of top-down observation.

The distinction is clear and crucial: in a Bitcoin system where transactions are divided into small, discrete exchanges, the focus is on practicality rather than pervasive surveillance. High-value transactions, the kind that attract attention—like those tied to significant criminal activities—can indeed be traced. But this tracing isn't achieved through an all-encompassing, Orwellian eye. It is accomplished through targeted investigation, a combination of traditional policing methods and human intelligence (HUMINT).

This approach mirrors the reality of justice: it isn't about monitoring every citizen under a microscope, but about focusing on those whose actions stand out, whose dealings are substantial enough to warrant scrutiny. The trail left by large sums can be pursued, just as a detective follows a lead. It is not an algorithmic panopticon but a path pursued by human reasoning, intuition, and evidence-gathering.

The very idea that this method could be scaled into mass surveillance misunderstands the nature of the system. The power of Bitcoin lies in the impossibility of tracking billions of micro-transactions—each as insignificant as a cup of coffee—while maintaining the freedom of everyday commerce. What it offers is not a tool of tyranny but a tool of efficiency. A system designed for speed and privacy, but not lawlessness..

It’s precisely this design that rejects the collectivist impulse to monitor and control every aspect of human action. Instead, Bitcoin respects the role of targeted, intelligent policing, leaving the myriad daily transactions free from the suffocating grip of centralized oversight. It’s a network where privacy is preserved through scale, not obscurity—a landscape where genuine criminal investigation can proceed, but where the lives of ordinary people remain their own. A world where the role of the state is to protect rights, not to peer into every exchange of value. This is not the tyranny of mass surveillance—it is the triumph of reasoned, focused justice.

#Bitcoin, in its original form, was meant to be a system of individual empowerment—peer-to-peer transactions that could scale infinitely and threaten entrenched powers.

BTC, however, is a captured and neutered version of that vision. It no longer scales, no longer challenges the status quo, and poses no real threat to banks or governments.

It is a shadow of what it was meant to be, tamed and reduced to the level of speculative gambling. A system that cannot scale is a system that cannot compete, and without competition, there is no freedom, only subservience.

BTC is weak because it serves those who want control, not those who seek independence.

By capping its potential, it has resigned itself to mediocrity, allowing the very institutions it was designed to disrupt to continue their dominance, unchallenged and unscathed.

True power does not reside in limitations—it thrives in the boundless potential of what can be built, what can scale, and what can challenge the old systems at their core.

BTC, by this measure, is no longer a revolution; it’s a surrender.

In this post, Peter Todd argues that Bitcoin "doesn't scale" due to the limitations of updating the UTXO (Unspent Transaction Output) set, claiming that as transaction volume increases, the scaling becomes infeasible, leading to what he describes as an O(n^2) scaling problem.

Todd suggests splitting transaction volumes among different chains to reduce the load on individual miners, but this concept relies on fragmenting the blockchain system, which can introduce complexities like trusted third-party issues and difficulties with transaction reordering.

https://www.mail-archive.com/bitcoin-development@lists.sourceforge.net/msg04388.html

However, this argument fundamentally contradicts what Satoshi Nakamoto envisioned. Satoshi explicitly stated that Bitcoin would never hit a scale ceiling, as the architecture of the system was designed to scale with transaction volume without breaking down.

Satoshi envisioned a system where the protocol, if left unaltered and managed properly, could handle vast amounts of transactions with no inherent limitations.

Teranode’s work has demonstrated that Bitcoin's scalability issues, as mentioned by Todd, are not insurmountable. The development of Teranode, with its architectural enhancements, allows for processing millions of transactions per second, showing that the UTXO problem is more of an engineering challenge than an inherent flaw in Bitcoin’s design.

By scaling horizontally through techniques like sharding and efficient processing, the Teranode implementation refutes Todd’s claim that scaling Bitcoin is infeasible.

Teranode’s approach ensures that large transaction volumes can be processed seamlessly, preserving the core principles of Bitcoin’s architecture while vastly increasing its throughput.

In essence, Todd’s claims about scaling limitations and the infeasibility of managing the UTXO set are shortsighted when weighed against the technological advancements achieved by projects like Teranode. These advancements align with Satoshi’s original vision of Bitcoin as a system capable of infinite scalability without compromising its decentralised nature.

This reinforces the fact that the true issue lies not in Bitcoin's design but in the willingness to innovate and implement solutions that maintain its scalability potential.

Peter Todd's statement that (I) Dr. Wright did not know anything about Bitcoin, and particularly his claim that the idea of Bitcoin being structured as a binary tree was false, has now been fundamentally contradicted by Todd's own words. In his discussions on tree-chains, Todd himself embraced the concept of structuring blockchain data in a tree-like format to address scalability issues.

This contradiction highlights an inconsistency in Todd's earlier statements and public testimony, where he denied the feasibility or validity of such architectural approaches.

When Todd made these statements—both publicly and in testimony—his subsequent work, including the very arguments he now presents in favor of tree-like structures for Bitcoin’s UTXO set, exposes his prior assertions as disingenuous or, more plainly, lies.

His own shift in position toward the concept of a binary tree for scaling and transaction processing demonstrates that he knew, or should have known, that such a structure was possible.

In essence, his earlier dismissal of my claims was not just wrong, but a deliberate misrepresentation of the technical reality, as evidenced by his own later admissions and work.

Peter Todd has consistently attacked me because I’ve managed to achieve what he claimed was impossible. He clings to the belief that scaling Bitcoin is a futile endeavor, rooted in his own limitations and inability to see beyond the challenges.

Todd’s insistence that Bitcoin couldn’t scale, particularly his erroneous claims about the UTXO set and the supposed infeasibility of managing it, were not just misunderstandings but reflect his own technical inadequacies.

The reality is that Teranode—developed under my guidance—proves him wrong.

It demonstrates that Bitcoin can, in fact, scale to handle millions of transactions per second. Teranode’s architecture and its innovations in horizontal scaling, sharding, and efficient processing expose the fallacy of Todd’s position.

His attacks are born out of frustration because I’ve done what he never could.

While he continues to hold on to outdated and flawed notions of Bitcoin’s limitations, Teranode stands as a testament to the true potential of the original design, a potential he never understood or could realise.

His bitterness stems from the fact that I’ve broken through the barriers he constructed in his own mind, leaving him unable to reconcile with the fact that Bitcoin’s true scale is achievable—and it's already happening.

https://www.mail-archive.com/bitcoin-development@lists.sourceforge.net/msg04388.html

Peter Todd treats the block as a linear structure, an approach that not only misunderstands the foundational principles of Bitcoin but fails to grasp the elegance of the system already in place.

The Merkle tree—a structure at the heart of Bitcoin—achieves exactly what he claims to be trying to solve.

By compartmentalizing transaction data in an efficient, scalable way, the Merkle tree integrates transactions into a framework that naturally allows for scaling without the convoluted changes Todd proposes.

His failure lies in his inability to recognize that the solution to his perceived problem is already embedded within the system.

The need to "change" Bitcoin to make it scalable is a misunderstanding of the architecture that Satoshi originally implemented.

The Merkle tree structure already ensures that Bitcoin can process vast amounts of transactions, verifying and validating them in an efficient manner without the linear constraints Todd seems fixated on.

Todd’s insistence on altering Bitcoin reflects a fundamental failure to understand its core. By treating the blockchain as something that requires restructuring to scale, he demonstrates a blindness to the power of the system as it was designed.

His proposals are solutions in search of a problem, rooted in a limited grasp of Bitcoin’s potential. This is the absolute failure to understand what Bitcoin truly is—a system that was designed to scale from the outset, and one that already possesses the tools for growth, if only one knows how to utilize them.

Bitcoin was designed with a fundamental distinction: it intentionally does not use encryption for transactions.

While some might assume that a system dealing with digital cash would rely on encryption to secure transaction data, this was not the choice made in the design.

Bitcoin uses ECDSA (Elliptic Curve Digital Signature Algorithm) for securing transactions, which is a method for creating cryptographic signatures but not for encrypting data.

The signatures ensure that transactions are authenticated and that the sender has control over the coins being spent, but the data itself remains visible on the public ledger.

This is a critical point of divergence from other cryptographic systems that use similar signature algorithms in an encryption context.

ECDSA in Bitcoin’s design serves a transparent purpose: it allows anyone in the network to verify transactions without needing to decrypt them. The intent is to maintain transparency, ensuring that every transaction is open to validation by any participant.

Unlike systems that prioritize obscuring data from view through encryption, Bitcoin’s goal was to establish an open and auditable ledger where transaction authenticity could be verified publicly.

By opting for this approach, Bitcoin prioritizes a model where trust is not in secrecy but in verifiable proof through signatures.

This makes the system resilient and decentralised, with security derived from the ability of anyone to independently validate the blockchain, rather than relying on the secrecy that encryption might provide.
