In comparing Modern Times and Metropolis, one must first recognize the stark philosophical divide between the two films. While both grapple with the dehumanizing effects of industrialization, the world each constructs could not be more different in its vision of the individual’s place within the collective. The question at the heart of each film is not merely how machines and industry affect humanity but whether the individual has any value or agency in such a world.

Metropolis presents a dystopia where the individual is entirely subsumed by the collective. Lang’s world is one in which workers are mere automatons, devoid of identity, thought, or purpose beyond serving the machine. They shuffle lifelessly through their roles, an undifferentiated mass with no ambition or will of their own. The central figure of Metropolis, Freder, represents the ultimate moral failing: the embrace of self-sacrifice. In Lang's vision, the solution to the oppression of the workers is not individual rebellion, but rather a grotesque union between the ruler and the ruled, mediated by a heart that sacrifices everything to serve both. It is the ultimate collectivist fantasy, where the value of the individual is denied, and the concept of personal achievement is obliterated.

By contrast, Chaplin’s Modern Times offers a satire of the industrial world, but it does not bow to the idea that man must be sacrificed to the machine. The Tramp, though caught in the gears of the factory and reduced to absurdity by the relentless demand for efficiency, remains distinctly, defiantly individual. He never succumbs to the collectivist ethos of the factory floor. Instead, he fights back—humorously, yes, but with the full force of his human spirit intact. Chaplin’s film acknowledges the absurdity and danger of a world dominated by machines, but it celebrates the triumph of the individual over the system. The Tramp’s actions, though often clumsy, are a testament to the resilience of the human mind and spirit. He never loses his autonomy, never allows the world of industrial capitalism to strip him of his individualism.

Where Metropolis preaches the subjugation of the individual to the collective, Modern Times champions the opposite: the individual's power to resist, to laugh, and to prevail even in the face of overwhelming odds. The President in Modern Times, with his ludicrous obsession over productivity and efficiency, is a caricature of the industrialist who sees men not as individuals but as mere components in his grand machine. And yet, Chaplin’s genius lies in showing that such a system, while oppressive, is ultimately powerless against the irreducible force of human individuality. The Tramp refuses to be a cog in anyone’s machine, and in doing so, he upholds the highest moral principle: that of living for his own sake.

The cinematic techniques used in both films reinforce these opposing philosophies. In Metropolis, the workers move in perfect, soulless synchrony, reflecting their total submission to the collective will. The massive, oppressive architecture of the city itself mirrors this subjugation, towering over the individual and reducing him to insignificance. By contrast, Modern Times uses the intimate close-up, the human face, and the individual body to convey the persistence of personal identity. Chaplin’s use of physical comedy becomes a weapon against the dehumanizing forces of industry, showing that the mind and spirit of the individual cannot be fully mechanized or controlled.

Ultimately, Metropolis is a film about collectivism, about the sacrifice of the individual for the sake of the whole. Modern Times, however, is a declaration of the individual’s power to overcome even the most oppressive systems. Chaplin's Tramp does not ask for the collective's approval, nor does he offer himself as a sacrificial lamb to the machine. He acts, he rebels, and in doing so, he affirms the only moral value that matters: his own existence. This is the essence of individualism, and it is the reason that Modern Times, unlike Metropolis, stands as a tribute to the human spirit rather than an elegy for its destruction.

Al comparar Tiempos modernos y Metrópolis, hay que reconocer en primer lugar la marcada división filosófica entre ambas películas. Metrópolis presenta una distopía en la que el individuo está completamente subsumido por el colectivo. El mundo de Lang es uno en el que los trabajadores son meros autómatas, carentes de identidad, pensamiento o propósito más allá de servir a la máquina. Se arrastran sin vida a través de sus roles, una masa indiferenciada sin ambición ni voluntad propias. La figura central de Metrópolis, Freder, representa el mayor defecto moral: la aceptación del autosacrificio. En la visión de Lang, la solución a la opresión de los trabajadores no es la rebelión individual, sino más bien una unión grotesca entre el gobernante y el gobernado, mediada por un corazón que sacrifica todo para servir a ambos. Es la máxima fantasía colectivista, donde se niega el valor del individuo y se borra el concepto de logro personal.

En cambio, Tiempos modernos de Chaplin ofrece una sátira del mundo industrial, pero no se inclina ante la idea de que el hombre debe ser sacrificado a la máquina. El vagabundo, aunque atrapado en los engranajes de la fábrica y reducido al absurdo por la incesante demanda de eficiencia, sigue siendo claramente individual y desafiante. Nunca sucumbe al ethos colectivista de la fábrica. En cambio, contraataca, con humor, sí, pero con toda la fuerza de su espíritu humano intacto. La película de Chaplin reconoce el absurdo y el peligro de un mundo dominado por las máquinas, pero celebra el triunfo del individuo sobre el sistema. Las acciones del vagabundo, aunque a menudo torpes, son un testimonio de la resistencia de la mente y el espíritu humanos. Nunca pierde su autonomía, nunca permite que el mundo del capitalismo industrial lo despoje de su individualismo.

Mientras que Metrópolis predica la subyugación del individuo a lo colectivo, Tiempos modernos defiende lo opuesto: el poder del individuo para resistir, reír y prevalecer incluso ante adversidades abrumadoras. El presidente de Tiempos modernos, con su ridícula obsesión por la productividad y la eficiencia, es una caricatura del industrial que ve a los hombres no como individuos sino como meros componentes de su gran máquina. Y, sin embargo, el genio de Chaplin reside en mostrar que un sistema así, aunque opresivo, es en última instancia impotente contra la fuerza irreductible de la individualidad humana. El vagabundo se niega a ser un engranaje de la máquina de nadie y, al hacerlo, defiende el principio moral más elevado: el de vivir para sí mismo.

Las técnicas cinematográficas utilizadas en ambas películas refuerzan estas filosofías opuestas. En Metrópolis, los trabajadores se mueven en perfecta sincronía sin alma, lo que refleja su total sumisión a la voluntad colectiva. La arquitectura masiva y opresiva de la ciudad refleja esta subyugación, elevándose sobre el individuo y reduciéndolo a la insignificancia. Por el contrario, Tiempos modernos utiliza el primer plano íntimo, el rostro humano y el cuerpo individual para transmitir la persistencia de la identidad personal. El uso que hace Chaplin de la comedia física se convierte en un arma contra las fuerzas deshumanizadoras de la industria, mostrando que la mente y el espíritu del individuo no pueden mecanizarse ni controlarse por completo.
