U.S. Supreme Court struck down President Donald Trump’s sweeping tariffs, ruling 6-3 that he exceeded his authority by using the International Emergency Economic Powers Act (IEEPA) to impose broad-based import duties. The court held that the law does not authorize the president to unilaterally impose tariffs, which are a form of taxation reserved for Congress under the Constitution.

Chief Justice John Roberts, joined by Justices Amy Coney Barrett, Neil Gorsuch, and the court’s three liberal justices, wrote that "the president asserts the extraordinary power to unilaterally impose tariffs of unlimited amount, duration, and scope" and must have clear congressional authorization—which was absent.
