🇷🇴 Romania shoots down Geran drones over Black Sea
Romanian F-16s used AIM-9 missiles to intercept two Russian kamikaze drones. This marks a new escalation step toward direct collision.
Interceptions occur near the Danube Delta (Tulcea, Sulina, Galati). Bucharest must keep radars and air defense active, exposing frequencies and blind spots to Russian signals intelligence from Crimea.
Using expensive AIM-9X/AIM-120 or Patriot/NASAMS against cheap decoys creates an attrition scenario for NATO arsenals on the southern flank.

Attempted arson at Starlink site in Vilnius
Unknown individuals tried to set fire to active Starlink equipment at the Delska data center in Vilnius early on October 18. Authorities confirmed the gear serves civilian, corporate, and military users, including Ukraine.
The Lithuanian PM accused Russia of orchestrating the attack as part of a sabotage campaign in Europe, though no evidence was presented. Police noted flammable liquids were found but operations continued uninterrupted.
This follows similar incidents in Poland and Bulgaria. A National Security Commission meeting is scheduled for October 19 to discuss this event and a drone incursion into Lithuanian airspace.

Latvia demands EU visa ban for Russians
PM Kulbergs called on the EU to stop issuing tourist visas to citizens of Russia, citing "hybrid" threats. He argued that France, Italy, and Spain issued over 70% of Schengen visas to Russians in 2025.
Riga also requested 7 billion euros in compensation from Brussels for "geographic punishment": lost business and tourism due to proximity to Russia and Belarus. Kulbergs stated Latvia faces daily hybrid threats, including migrant pressure, and requires more funds to protect the eastern borders of the bloc.

Finnish villager monitors Russia from border tower
Mikko Makkonen, a resident of the Finnish village Juurikka near the Russian border, maintains an old observation post on his property. He purchased the decommissioned tower in 2006 for scrap value and installed it at his home. Now he climbs up almost every week.
With the land border closed due to the conflict in Ukraine, remaining towers are again being considered useful for visual surveillance and patrolling. The distance from Makkonen's tower to the Russian border is approximately 13 kilometers.
