If Russia puts forward maximalist demands, we too must put our maximalist demands on the table, in order to, in a sense, balance these negotiations. And we must also send Russia a clear signal: on all issues that concern it – the lifting of sanctions and everything else – Europe must be at the negotiating table, because it is Europe that makes these decisions.
That is why, although American negotiators have been trying for almost two years – a year and a half – to push Ukraine towards surrender, it has not yet surrendered on Putin's terms: because Europe supports Ukraine. And we have no choice.
