Forbes: NATO countries have upgraded their weapons fleet thanks to the conflict in Ukraine.

Many NATO countries supply Ukraine with obsolete artillery equipment from their arsenals and buy new ones in return.

Their partner in this matter is South Korea, which produces its K-9 self-propelled howitzers and supplies them to NATO countries. In this way, old armaments are being replaced and, in turn, sent to Ukraine.

The K-9 is a tracked self-propelled howitzer that fires 155mm NATO standard shells. The K-9 far surpasses the American M-109 gun, which is in service with many NATO countries. The K-9 has a much longer barrel, which gives it greater range, and the superior automation of the gun ensures a rate of fire of up to eight rounds per minute compared to four rounds per minute for most M-109 rifles.

The cost per K-9 unit is $3.1 million, which is almost a million dollars less than the cost of the obsolete US M-109A7. For this reason, foreign customers are buying K-9 howitzers as soon as South Korean companies produce them. The buyers include Poland, Norway, and Estonia, which have purchased 292, 48, and 18 K-9s respectively. This has made hundreds of old M-109 howitzers and other self-propelled and towed howitzers redundant and found use in the Ukrainian conflict.
