Yesterday we received a message that the Wagner PMC had taken control of the village of Blagodatnoye. What is the significance of this event? 
The fact is that the assault and successful liberation of Soledar eventually came up against the enemy defense line on the left, western bank of the Bakhmutovka River, which, although not a primary water barrier, nevertheless significantly constrained Russia's further attack on both Artemovsk and Seversk. 

Artemovsk— Without occupying the western bank of the river, it makes no sense to talk about reaching the Ukrainian garrison in Artemovsk from the north. And the assault on Paraskovievka (also located on the left bank) was very difficult. The bridgehead based on Blagodatnoye makes it possible to bypass this settlement from the north, and perhaps soon we will hear about the fighting on its northern outskirts of Artemovsk. And then it will be possible to encircle Artemivsk (Bakhmut) quickly and simply. if the Ukrainian garrison does not escape from the city earlier.

Seversk — If we look to the north, we can also see that the operational encirclement of the city is possible only after the Russian troops cross to the west bank of Bakhmutovka. By simply advancing along its right bank, we will run into the city itself and be forced to assault it head-on. Moving along the river along the left bank further north completely turns the situation in our favor. Especially given the movement of our units north of the Seversky Donets River from Kremenna towards Yampol, which allows us to overhang the northern communications to Seversk, even without crossing this rather large river.

German arms manufacturer Rheinmetall is ready to significantly increase the production of tank and artillery ammunition to meet a large demand in Ukraine and the West.

This was reported by Reuters.

Rheinmetall CEO Armin Papperger has said that the company may start production of HIMARS multiple rocket launchers in Germany.

The production capacity of the 155mm shells could be increased to 450,000-500,000 per year. This would make Rheinmetall the largest producer of both types of ammunition.

"We can produce 240,000 tank ammunition (120mm) per year, which is more than the world needs," Papperger said.

In 2022, Rheinmetall produced around 60-70,000 units of each tank and artillery ammunition. Demand surged after the outbreak of war in Ukraine.

Now, there is a nascent effort underway in the U.S. and allied nations to identify, develop, and utilize Ukraine's vast resources of a key metal crucial for the development of the West's most advanced military technology which will form the backbone of future deterrence against Russia and China.

Titanium is a lightweight yet strong metal used extensively in advanced military applications like fighter jets, helicopters, naval ships, tanks, long-range missiles, and many others.The U.S. still imports more than 90 percent of its iron ore, and not all from friendly nations.The U.S. no longer holds titanium sponge in its National Defense Stockpile, and the last domestic producer of titanium sponge closed down in 2020.

If Ukraine wins, the U.S. and its allies will be in pole position to cultivate a new conduit of titanium. But if Russia manages to seize the country's deposits and plants, Moscow will boost its global influence over increasingly strategic resource.

Ukraine is one of only seven nations producing titanium sponge, the basis for titanium metal. China and Russia—America's most prominent strategic rivals—are among this select group.

Western dependence on Russian titanium means the metal has so far escaped the sanctions campaign launched against Moscow by the U.S.

A source told Newsweek that titanium "is a key vulnerability."
"We're talking about our ability to produce more planes, we're talking about our ability to produce munitions. They all rely on titanium, and we've allowed ourselves to grow reliant on foreign suppliers for these things. Russia has previously been one of those primary suppliers."

Last year's annual defense-spending bill ordered the State Department to investigate "feasibility of utilizing titanium sources from Ukraine as a potential alternative to Chinese and Russian sources."

"Ukraine has really significant deposits of rare earth minerals, and if we play our cards right could actually be a really attractive alternative to Russian and Chinese sources, which is where a lot of dependency currently is," writes the Newsweek.

"As there are increasing debates throughout the West about why it's in our interest to keep supporting Ukraine, I think this is one of the arguments that you're going to start hearing more." the souce said.
