Heh. Here's the thing. Balloons like this fly very high. In the stratosphere.

They hardly reflect radio signal, therefore nobody's antiaircraft missiles with radar guidance have ever shot down anything of the sort. The aerostats, they don't give a shit at a gun's rounds, as they have a honeycomb structure and need a special anti-aerostatic shell, which has an oversensitive fuse capable of being ignited from contact with the thin of the air balloon shell.

And their presence on aircraft is highly questionable. In USSR for destroying of aerostats special planes were allocated, and special launchers with special armament were developed.

Well, the most effective (and essentially the only) method remains the attack using infra-red self-guided missiles in an attempt to capture the sun-heated side of the balloon.

All the talk about the Americans not wanting to shoot it down is nonsense, of course. They can't. They simply cannot.

Either gringo aircraft armament specs don't allow it or the skill of the pilots don't permit it.

But once again. Aerostats—they are very difficult targets. And had the ordinary US citizens not seen this Chinese probe, the Pentagon would have pretend it never happened.

Now try to break it down and explain how the premier army on the planet can't shoot down an enemy balloon over their own country. 😁
