The future of Telegram
As Telegram approaches 500 million active users, how will they pay? π€
Some points from the announcement today.
π Telegram will Not sell.
π Telegram will begin to generate revenue in 2021. Most users will hardly notice any change.
π All the features that are currently free will stay free.
π Messaging will remain ad-free.
π Introduction of a native Ad Platform for public one-to-many channels β one that is user-friendly, respects privacy and allows Telegram to cover the costs of servers and traffic.
π If Telegram starts earning money, the community should also benefit.

Voice Chats Done Right
Today, Telegram groups get an entire new dimension with Voice Chats β persistent conference calls that members can join and leave as they please. Our 12th update in 2020 brings them to you just in time for remote Christmas carols.
The last few days I've been working on a new (local) social project which I hope will take off in 2021.
During that process what's been surprising to me is how little Twitter is used generally by business.
It's common for businesses to have a Facebook page and an Instagram channel: but seem rather rare to also feature a Twitter channel.
Do you agree?
Do you think it's down to Twitter's failing to connect with business, or an unavoidable result of Facebook's dominance in the social space?

If an image is worth a 1000 words ...
I hope that this image can help future publishers, for the @MyStadtKoeln network, to understand how each local channel is connected a group (for channel comments and more).

View Followed Hashtags on Instagram
You have been able to "follow" a hashtag on Instagram for ages, but I cannot (now) for the life of me now see how to view all the hashtags followed by the account I am currently using.
Any tips?

Robert Wallis - AMA
Ask Me Anything ... within reason π
Note, that there should always be a reason for posting on social media and that reason should be quite clear to viewers.
The reason for this post is that I would like to have a fun @RobertWallis related discussion appear on my "About Robert Wallis" page. I link to that page from my social profiles around the web.
So full disclosure: your "comments" along with my replies will also appear there.
So, having been as up-front as I think I can be .... ask-me-anything. Go!

Once you get it, it's really quite simple
One, Two, Thee views of the same message.
Get it?
Most people do not yet understand this, which is a bit of a roadblock. This unique implementation for "comments" offers some interesting possibilities. That is the discussion I would like to have here.

THIS quote is worth thinking about ...
"By removing the manipulative algorithms that have become synonymous with 2010s technology platforms, Telegram channels restore transparency and integrity to public βone-to-manyβ communication."
If had to reduce down to one idea why I think that Telegram channels are a corporate or brand communication channel that is really worth considering, it would be because the user decides whether they want notifications for updates made to a channel.
Remember the first flush of social media back in the day, when a reasonable number of people would see updates from your Facebook page?
With a Telegram channel ALL followers who want notifications from a Telegram channel get notifications. That is a decent value proposition.

YouTube hashtag pages
I wrote a bit about hashtags for YouTube last year. Now the hashtag pages have been fully rolled out.
The example pictured is for the @TeamFordzilla's hashtag.
I would expect YouTube to surface links to hashtag pages in more places in the near future, so it's definitely worth strategically adding hashtags to your video uploads in 2021.

Strategy - Serve your audience
I've worked for Ford Europe for over a decade. As such my focus has always been on Ford's markets within Europe.
I recognise though that people who view communications I've posted on behalf of Ford Europe are also seen by people outside of Europe. What about them?
Although those people are not "my intended audience" they can still engage with Ford Europe. So I also strategically direct those people somewhere (fingers crossed) which is relevant to them.
Nearly 60% of those who have clicked on Ford.to/Ford (link used in FordEU's bio) were from the USA, so they are directed to Ford.com (The US site).
Elsewhere (outside of Europe) users are directed to Google News: ford.to/EUnews where Ford Europe's articles and video content is available.
Within Europe "my users" go to the relevant Ford national web portal.
The point I am trying to make is that there is a balance between what you want, which might be visits to a web page for example, and what is more appropriate for the viewer.
A good strategy in my opinion, serves your goals, but not at the expense of other users.
So although 70% of users have not been directed to "my destinations" I can still hope to have served them well.
