CHANGING BIBLICAL INTERPRETATION AXIOMS AS AN EXPERIMENT IN ABRAHAMIC HISTORY

Mathematics and theology are closely related. Both designate certain sets of assertions as axiomatic. Being unproven and unprovable, axioms are accepted on faith and used as such.

In Christianity, it is axiomatic that God is incapable of imperfection. It is also axiomatic that the Bible is the literal word of a perfect God. This hinders the use of Biblical texts for historical purposes, as the reality of history never matches the perceived perfection of the Bible.

If we change the axioms, we can get radically different results. Let's make an experiment. Let's assume as axiomatic that the Bible is not the word of God, but merely the word of those who were either seeking God or thought they had found God. Let's assume that no human is perfect and that the goodness found in the Bible comes in an imperfect setting. Let's now go further. Let's consider the Genesis story of Abraham in genealogical terms.

The genealogical axioms that we have arbitrarily decided to use are 1) that only those genealogical relationships designated in Genesis be accepted, 2) that an Abrahamic year will be seen as equinox to equinox, thus making two Abrahamic years for every solar year, and 3) that human biology worked in the same manner in Abrahamic times as in modern times, In such a case, what hypothetical history could we come up with?

For one, Abraham would appear mentally unstable. He talks with God, bargains with God, and was prepared to sacrifice his son in the belief that God told him to do so. If someone did any of these things today, that person would be put in an insane asylum. Either that or become a fabulously wealthy Evangelical preacher.

Moreover, if Genesis is to be believed, Abraham committed incest, by taking Sarah, his father's daughter by another woman, as his wife. Considering the nature of the relationship between husband and wife, it would not have been unusual if Sarah had had difficulty in carrying a pregnancy to term. Unsuccessful pregnancies would not have been remembered.

Thus, when Sarah was 45 solar years of age and Abraham 50 solar years, they were delighted when Sarah was able to carry a child, Isaac, to full term. This had been predicted by an unexpected visitor they entertained. Considering how old they were, later generations naturally assumed that the visitor was an angel rather than a human being who was trying to say something encouraging in partial repayment of the hospitality he had received.

Sarah died when Isaac was 15 solar years of age and Abraham married him off at 20 solar years of age to a first cousin once removed. Isaac, apparently due to a genetic defect caused from being the product of an incestuous union, quickly became blind as an adult. Moreover, his wife is not recorded as having immediately had children but, after a considerable time trying, succeeded in having children just one time. She gave birth to fraternal twins, Esau and Jacob. But were these Isaac's biological children or were they the product of extramarital help? How do we know one way or the other?

We could go on. We could produce a totally different history of Abraham and his Hebrew descendants. But, could we ever prove their historicity down to the times of the early kings of Judah and Israel? We have no near contemporary records to corroborate what is written in these parts of the Hebrew Bible. And, concerning Genesis as the perfect word of a perfect God, we must ask ourselves why a perfect God condoned incest and blessed it. We must also be prepared to ignore the archeological record wherever it is not entirely in agreement.

From error to error. All becomes error. Wouldn't it be better to occasionally use commonsense? After all, that, too, is a gift of God.
