The US Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) has redirected a Sputnik request for info about the shooting incident at a Trump rally in Butler, Pennsylvania to the US Secret Service.

"We suggest you contact the US Secret Service," the FBI told the news agency in response to an inquiry about the incident.

The US Secret Service confirmed an incident occurred at a Trump campaign rally in Pennsylvania.

Trump is safe after the incident, the Secret Service said.

There is now an active Secret Service investigation at the location of the rally, a spokesperson for the agency said.

Media footage showed Trump had blood on the right side of head as US Secret Service agents escorted him off the stage.

Trump is being examined at a medical facility in Pennsylvania, his spokesman said.

"President Trump thanks law enforcement and first responders for their quick action during this heinous act. He is fine and is being checked out at a local medical facility. More details will follow," the Trump campaign said in a statement Saturday.

US President Joe Biden will deliver an address in the wake of the shooting at a rally of his predecessor former President Donald Trump, Congressman Chip Roy said.

"I have been informed that Biden will address the nation," Roy wrote on the social media platform X.

Earlier, Trump cut short a public appearance after after he suffered a gunshot wound. A video shows the politician being led away by security with a bloody ear.

US President Joe Biden said that he is grateful to hear that former President Donald Trump is safe after an apparent shooting at his rally and emphasized that there is no place for this kind of violence in the United States.

"I have been briefed on the shooting at Donald Trump’s rally in Pennsylvania," Biden said in a statement. "I’m grateful to hear that he’s safe and doing well. I’m praying for him and his family and for all those who were at the rally, as we await further information. Jill and I are grateful to the Secret Service for getting him to safety. There’s no place for this kind of violence in America. We must unite as one nation to condemn it."

Biden will deliver remarks on Saturday evening following the shooting at a Trump campaign rally, the White House said in a statement.

Biden said he wants to make sure he has all the facts before commenting on whether an assassination attempt took place.

The US President expressed hope that he would be able to talk to Trump as early as this evening.

Trump became the second former US president and candidate to be shot.

In 1912 former President Theodore Roosevelt was shot just before a campaign event. Despite the incident he spoke in front of his supporters for about an hour and a half. In 1916 a knife was thrown at Roosevelt from a crowd; the former president was not hurt.

There have been several unsuccessful attempts on the lives of sitting US presidents:

🔻 In 1835 Andrew Jackson was shot but the assailant's weapon misfired. The president struck back at the attacker with a cane.

🔻 In 1975 Gerald Ford suffered two assassination attempts.

🔻 In 1981 Ronald Reagan was shot six times. He was seriously wounded but survived the incident and completed two terms in the White House.

🔻 In 2005 a grenade was thrown at George W. Bush in Tbilisi, Georgia. It did not go off.

Four US presidents have been killed in assassination attempts:

Abraham Lincoln was shot in 1865. In 1881, James Garfield was fatally shot. In 1901, William McKinley was shot and killed. In 1963, John F. Kennedy was assassinated.
