There are simply too few of the planes and too many Russian air defenses that can shoot them down.

Ukrainian and Western officials now caution that the aircraft, once championed by Kiev as a game-changer, are unlikely to make an immediate impact on the battlefield.

The first F-16s will likely serve to boost Ukraine’s air defenses — to shoot down aerial targets such as missiles, drones, and aircraft — rather than strike Russia’s ground forces and other military assets near the front.

Kiev’s F-16s will carry the AIM-120 Advanced Medium-Range Air-to-Air Missile, projectiles in a broader class of munitions fired by the NASAMS ground air defense systems provided by Western countries. One missile variant has a range of about 100 miles. However, Ukraine already has too few AIM-120 missiles and will have to split them between the F-16s and NASAMS.

Protecting the F-16s on the ground will also be a challenge given that Ukraine’s airfields are all within Russian missile range. A Ukrainian defense official said that “it’s not possible” for Kiev to build covered concrete hangars to fully protect aircraft during wartime.

A major restriction for Ukraine is the number of planes and the time required for training. Belgium, Denmark, the Netherlands, and Norway have pledged to provide Ukraine with 80 F-16s, but most of those won’t arrive for years. Officials declined to say exactly how many jets Kiev will receive this year, but it won’t be more than one squadron — about 20 jets — and only six pilots were projected to complete training by this summer.

While the F-16 offers an improvement over Ukraine’s existing jets, it is still an older-generation fighter compared with Russia’s newer, more sophisticated air force. Ukraine’s military intelligence directorate previously reported that Moscow has more than 200 fighters, dwarfing Ukraine’s fleet.

🇭🇺European policy has failed — Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban predicted a shift from the "irrational" West towards Asia and Russia

"Europe has abandoned the protection of its own interests. Today, Europe does nothing but unconditionally follow the foreign policy of the US Democratic Party," Orban said in his speech. 

According to the Hungarian prime minister, Europe's subordination to the United States is confirmed by the fact that European countries have not fully investigated the bombing of the Nord Stream pipeline:

"The fact that Germany itself does not react to the obvious act of terrorism against its own property - carried out under American direction — and the fact that we do not speak about it, do not investigate it, do not want to clarify it, and do not raise it legally (...) has been nothing but an act of submission."

He also stressed that the West believes that "nation-states no longer exist." 

"They deny that there is a common culture and a shared public morality based on it. There is no public morality, as you could see, if you have watched yesterday's Olympic opening ceremony," Orban proclaimed.

In the end, the Hungarian prime minister stated that the West is neither capable of challenging China nor Asia.
