Amazon's Alexa Gives Lethal Challenge to Bored Child (Report)

The Amazon device left a parent stunned when it suggested a potentially deadly challenge for Kristin Livdahl's 10-year-old daughter. It was prompted, “Alexa tell me a challenge to do.”

"The challenge is simple," the AI said. "Plug in a phone charger about halfway into a wall outlet, then touch a penny to the exposed prongs."

"I was right there and yelled, 'No, Alexa, no!' like it was a dog," Livdahl said. Amazon has been in touch with her via Twitter, saying they will investigate Alexa’s rogue behavior.

CDC says it exaggerated Omicron’s spread

Only 22.5% of US Covid-19 infections recorded in the week that ended on December 18 were linked to Omicron, rather than the 73.2% estimate that was announced last week, the CDC said on Tuesday. It also revealed that the new strain accounted for 58.6% of new cases in the week that ended on December 25, while almost all other infections were caused by the Delta variant.

The figure, overstated by around 225%, had been put out ahead of last week’s stern warning to Americans issued by Joe Biden

China shuts down second city amid worsening Covid-19 outbreaks

Officials have closed the city of Yan’an, 186 miles from Xi’an, the country’s first city to go into lockdown since last year, local media reported.

Authorities have closed most businesses and ordered hundreds of thousands of people to remain indoors. (The Guardian)

China has been pursuing a “zero-Covid” policy since the outbreak began, however has been battling small case numbers since reporting of the Omicron variant began.

Belgium considering mandatory vaccination

Prime Minister Alexander De Croo is allegedly considering making vaccination mandatory as intensive care units struggle to serve the nation’s Covid sick. (Politico)

"The goal is clear: we must vaccinate everyone. If the path of mandatory vaccination can help, then I would like to consider it,” De Croo said in a statement.

The number of Covid patients in Belgian hospitals dropped below 2,000 at the weekend for the first time since November. However there are fears that with the Omicron variant, numbers will soon again soar.
