Why are white blood cells elevated and what to do about it
White blood cells are an essential part of the immune system. They are the white blood cells that help the body fight various diseases-from viral and bacterial infections to cancerous tumors.
The process is simple: as soon as the immune system encounters a threat, the first thing it does is send a signal to the bone marrow to produce more white blood cells to fight off the disease. The level of white blood cells in the blood increases dramatically. This increase is called leukocytosis by doctors.
How to find out if you have elevated white blood cells
Leukocytosis does not necessarily manifest itself in any symptoms. Sometimes too much white cells are detected by accident — when you do a general blood test, for example, for a regular routine check-up.
But the therapist or other doctor who is watching you may suggest that you check your white blood cells carefully. As a rule, the test is prescribed if there are signs of infection, inflammation or an autoimmune disease. Here are the main ones:
a high temperature that lasts for several days in a row or appears after a seemingly already suffered illness;
muscle and joint pain;
headaches;
chills;
night sweats;
enlarged lymph nodes or enlarged spleen.
What level of white blood cells is considered high
On average, the blood of an adult healthy person contains from 4 to 11 thousand white blood cells per milliliter (4-11 × 10⁹/l). In children-5-10 thousand (5-10 × 10⁹/l).
If the total number of white blood cells is more than 11 × 10⁹/l, they indicate an increased level of white blood cells, or leukocytosis.
Why are white blood cells elevated?
Here are the most common reasons why the number of white cells in the blood increases.
1. Infection
And any: viral, bacterial, fungal, parasitic.
2. Damage to body tissues
Leukocytosis is often detected in burns, wounds, or after extensive surgical procedures. So the body tries to protect itself from the possible spread of infection.
3. Autoimmune diseases
These are conditions in which the immune system begins to attack the cells of its own body. This may include, for example, systemic lupus erythematosus or rheumatoid arthritis.
4. Taking certain medications
There are drugs that the immune system identifies as a threat. For example, corticosteroids, epinephrine, lithium, and beta-agonists (drugs that are prescribed to improve breathing).
5. Stress
For example, physical or emotional stress.
6. Allergic reactions
Most noticeably, the level of white blood cells increases with severe allergies such as anaphylactic shock. But it can also grow with the usual seasonal fever or food sensitization reactions.
7. Pregnancy and childbirth
The level of white blood cells in pregnant women can increase to 15.9 × 10⁹/l.
This is a variant of the norm: the number of white blood cells increases due to the stress and physical changes that a woman experiences. After delivery, the white blood cell level returns to standard values.
8. Diseases of the bone marrow and blood
Sometimes leukemia or lymphomas cause the bone marrow to increase the production of white blood cells.
What to do if your white blood cells are elevated
Contact your doctor with the results of the analysis. And to the one that sent you for research.
The fact is that it is impossible to decipher the test results by themselves. To make a diagnosis, it is necessary to correlate the level of white blood cells with additional factors :
Symptoms.
Age and gender of the patient.
His way of life.
The presence of chronic diseases.
Bad habits. Sometimes an increased white blood cell count can even be associated with the fact that a person smokes.
The white blood cell formula. So cal[...]
