Hot Wheels Custom ’71 Datsun 240Z (Rotsun), a 2020 MotorTrend / Roadkill Exclusive
Thanks to this special promotion by Hot Wheels x MotorTrend, Hot Wheels collectors received the “before version” back in June, complete with a one-of-a-kind, rust deco on the existing Hot Wheels #Datsun 240Z casting. The second part of the package deal which also included a year’s subscription to the MotorTrend app is the Rotsun which is a completely new Hot Wheels casting designed by famed Hot Wheels premium designer, Mark Jones.

Hot Wheels Custom ’71 Datsun 240Z “Rotsun” (after), a 2020 MotorTrend / Roadkill Exclusive with the Datsun 240Z (before) … Head-to-Head
Since there was an overwhelming response to the subscription offer when it went on sale back in April, Hot Wheels and MotorTrend decided to (once again) present a limited time offer to Hot Wheels collectors: the Rotsun plus a year’s subscription to the MotorTrend App for only $29.99. So, if you missed out on the Rotsun, you still have a chance to own the newest premium Hot Wheels car. NOTE: Collectors that placed their orders back in April will still receive their Rotsun as part of the original package deal. Rotsun is expected to ship in November.

The Rotsun is in rare company as far as Hot Wheels #Promotional Vehicles go as not many castings have been created from scratch with that sole purpose. Hot Wheels could have simply applied some extra graphic details to the #Datsun 240Z casting, but no… they went all-in with by creating the #Custom ’71 Datsun 240Z (Rotsun) casting. They even added the mismatched set of #Real Riders with a varying rim-to-tire size (back vs. front) just like the real car.

Roadkill’s favorite turbo-charged rustbucket is the project that never fails to fail. The infamous #Custom ’71 Datsun 240Z nicknamed the “Rotsun” now joins a long list of famed #TV & Movie Cars courtesy of a promotion between Hot Wheels and MotorTrend. For fans of the show — like myself — the Rotsun has seen many lives. From its days as a rusty, old 240Z (bought for only $500), to racing autocross down the road from me at Westworld of Scottsdale, to competing — well, trying to — at the 24 hours of Lemons; the Rotsun has taken on a persona of its own.

engine is truly special, as its something you don’t see on a lot of Hot Wheels premium cars. Hot Wheels designs are known for having character elements as part of their custom design, but since this car is a character in its own right, Hot Wheels had to get this one right — and they did!
Apart from the completely custom engine that was thrown into this built-from-scratch Hot Wheels casting, the body of the #Custom ’71 Datsun 240Z also has a few features that separate it from other Hot Wheels #Z castings from that era. First of all, this casting has side mirrors. Collectors love to hate on Hot Wheels cars without side mirrors and since this one wasn’t built for the orange track, this one can have them — its a premium casting with metal body & metal base after all. The casting also has a rear bumper that is a separate piece from the body. In the front, you can see the metal base protruding up through the front of the body in the form of a rusted out radiator. https://web.archive.org/save/_embed/https://diecastmotorsports.files.wordpress.com/2020/08/rotsun-20-motortrend-engine-1200pxotd.png?w=566&h=339 Hot Wheels Custom ’71 Datsun 240Z (Rotsun), a 2020 MotorTrend / Roadkill Exclusive (engine / “hater pipe” view) https://web.archive.org/save/_embed/https://diecastmotorsports.files.wordpress.com/2020/08/rotsun-20-motortrend-base-1200pxotd.png?w=726&h=339 Hot Wheels Custom ’71 Datsun 240Z (Rotsun), a 2020 MotorTrend / Roadkill Exclusive (base/chassis view)
As far as the graphics are concerned, the rust detail on this pair is one-of-a-kind as I simply cannot remember a Hot Wheels cars with this good of rust detail. Then again, it’s the Rotsun and rust is in its DNA. It is also worth noting that the car has the “ROTSUN” windshield banner and the 24 Hours of Lemons “sticker” on the sides.
What the best part about now having a subscription to the MotorTrend App is that you can go back and search through the many episodes on the Rotsun and literally view every failure of this car and how it transformed from a rusted out Datsun 240Z to a rusted out 240Z with a ton of flippin’ power. The Rotsun is every much a part of the show Roadkill as its hosts, David Freiburger and Mike Finnegan, and every episode seems to add another level of character to this infamous beast. If you’re a fan like I am, you’re in luck as you can still add the Rotsun to your Hot Wheels garage via this exclusive link!
