„Martenitsa (Bulgarian: мартеница, pronounced [ˈmartɛnit͡sa]; plural мартеници martenitsi) is a small piece of adornment, made of white and red yarn and worn from March 1 until around the end of March (or the first time an individual sees a stork, swallow, or budding tree). The name of the holiday is Baba Marta. "Baba" (баба) is the Bulgarian word for "grandmother" and Mart (март) is the Bulgarian word for the month of March. Baba Marta[1] is a Bulgarian tradition related to welcoming the upcoming spring. The month of March, according to Bulgarian folklore, marks the beginning of springtime. Therefore, the first day of March is a traditional holiday associated with sending off winter and welcoming spring." http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Martenitsa

"I saw the first serpents: youths from the village were standing on the square, carrying whole bundles of earthbrown adders with bright stripes and white bellies in their hands or around their necks. Some were two meters long - a snake pit. Using an instant camera, a young man was taking photos of the surrounding people with snakes. The young people had caught the harmless serpents in the neighboring fields and hills over the past days and weeks. In earlier times poisonous snakes that had had their fangs removed took part in the ceremony. It was said that on this day the serpents would not bite, but the populace obviously did not entirely trust this tradition." (Gerhard Hallstatt: Blutleuchte. Chapter XVI. Angizia)
