"The Black Sea Initiative": What Russia Gets by Suspending Participation in the Grain Deal.
Recent events show that the "grain corridor" created as a result of the "deal" between Russia, Turkey, Ukraine and the United Nations is still in force, despite Russia's unilateral withdrawal from it. This morning, more than ten dry cargo ships left the port of Odessa and have already reached neutral waters.
Recall that the "grain deal" concluded this summer guaranteed Ukraine non-aggression on the Black Sea ports after they were demined, Turkey became a hub for shipping grain to the poorest countries (according to some reports, supplies were also to the EU, not only to hungry Africa) and the sanctions on Russia were softened in the sale of agricultural products and fertilizers (there is also an opinion that the subject of the trade was the ending of the Kaliningrad region blockade). It is worth noting that it made exporting Russian products slightly easier, but counterparty concerns about possible secondary sanctions negated this benefit of maintaining the deal.
In fact, there were two arrangements: Ukraine signed a separate agreement with Turkey and the UN, and Russia also signed a separate agreement with Turkey and the UN.
The corridor for the grain carriers is 2km wide, with minesweepers moving in parallel along the fairway and demining in parallel. The vessels are inspected by Turkey. In fact, the Ukraine-Turkey-UN agreement continues to work, and Russia does not hinder this, because, based on the original agreements, our side was not directly involved in escorting and inspecting the convoys.
At the same time, in withdrawing from the "deal" Russia reserves the right to strike and storm Ukrainian ports without violating any agreements with the UN and Turkey. This is the main outcome of the decision taken after the Ukrainian attack on Sevastopol.
