EU to propose mandatory cuts in electricity consumption

The European Commission will propose to the 27 EU members two targets to reduce electricity demand: an objective regarding the reduction of general consumption and a mandatory objective regarding the reduction of demand during certain hours when a consumption peak is recorded.

These measures are aimed at providing Europe with enough fuel during the cold months.

EU gas storage facilities are currently 84% full, exceeding the EU’s pre-winter filling target. However, analysts say Europe will still need to cut gas use over winter to avoid storage facilities running dry.

Twitter shareholders approve Elon Musk's buyout

Twitter shareholders on Tuesday voted to approve Elon Musk's $44 billion bid to buy the company and take it private.

Twitter representatives also confirmed the preliminary count shows that the required majority was reached in the vote.

The vote came as Musk is seeking to back out of the deal, leading to Twitter suing him for allegedly breaking the agreement.

Today's vote allows Twitter to continue with a lawsuit to force Musk to close the deal.

Musk claims Twitter concealed important facts about its internal operations, including alleged undercounting of spam and bot accounts on the platform, as well as details revealed by Twitter's former security head. However, Twitter will still push to close the deal, arguing that Musk's complaints are merely a pretext for backing out.

US and EU discussing possible China sanctions

The United States is considering options for a sanctions package against China to deter it from invading Taiwan, with the European Union also under diplomatic pressure from Taipei to do the same, according to sources familiar with the discussions, Reuters reported.

The deliberations in Washington and Taipei's separate lobbying of EU envoys are only at an early stage, the sources said.

In both cases, the idea is to impose sanctions beyond measures already taken to restrict some trade and investment with China in sensitive technologies like computer chips and telecoms equipment, as well as technology needed to support possible military action.

Nonetheless, the sources note sanctions against the world's second largest economy and one of the global supply chain's biggest links raises questions of feasibility. Moreover, European sanctions would require all 27 member countries to agree, which is elusive.
