On August 9, 2022 the inaugural Australian National Biosecurity Strategy report was released by the Australian Federal Government, which made no mention of mRNA as a strategy to combat biosecurity threats in animals. It announced the implementation of a National Biosecurity Strategy Implementation Committee (NIC) to work together with the National Biosecurity Committee to develop, oversee, implement, monitor and review the national implementation plan &:the national action plan.

By September 9, 2022 the Australian Minister for Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry, Senator the Hon. Murray Watt was “exploring opportunities” of an mRNA vaccine for animals, and by September 28, 2022 it was declared by the then Deputy Premier of NSW, Paul Toole and NSW Minister for Agriculture, Dugald Saunders, that August 2023 would be the “date for readiness” for any future outbreak of Foot and Mouth Disease (FMD) and Lumpy Skin Disease (LSD) after taking another step towards fast tracking the world first mRNA vaccines for animals.

Professor Pall Thordarson, Director of the University of New South Wales RNA Institute, and Head of the NSW RNA Bioscience Alliance, welcomed the agreement with Tiba Biotech, stating the deal between Tiba Biotech and the NSW, Queensland and Federal Animal Research and Biosecurity agencies will advance our shared vision to make Australia a global powerhouse in the RNA ecosystem."

By January 12, 2023 CEPI, chaired by Australian Sarah “Jane” Halton, was partnering with Tiba Biotech. (CEPI was pledged over $ 300 million by the Bill and Melinda Gates foundation to fight COVID-19.)

Of particular concern to Australians, primary producers, and meat eaters internationally (Australia exports a significant amount of the highest quality meat internationally) are:

Why mRNA vaccines?
Have they shown any efficacy in any trial?
What is wrong with the present systems to deal with FMD and LSD?

There is NO mention of the deaths, harms and lack of success of mRNA vaccination in humans. No adequate public reviews, no discussion with farmers, no mention of trials, no risk analysis of potential animal harms and deaths. No analysis of potentially compromised beef, lamb, pork, goat, venison and camel from a world renowned clean source.

Will this effectively end the viability of our agricultural meat products?

The enormous harms and deaths caused by the mRNA vaccines in humans globally are now well documented. Given the fact that they have now been proven to be neither safe nor effective why would we introduce these harms to our animals, our food security and our very important primary and secondary industries?

My greatest concern is that there will be a repeat of the COVID-19 debacle, where fear and panic will overtake any transparency and review processes as the media jumps on the bandwagon again to rush “solutions” through, that have neither been tested or proved to effective. In fact, mRNA on humans has been a failure at best.

CRISPR

The ability to precisely edit the genome of a living cell holds enormous potential to accelerate life science research, improve biotechnology & even treat human disease.

Methods for genome editing - primarily zinc finger nucleases & Transcription Activator-Like Effector (TALE) Nucleases - have existed for several years.. in 2013 these were quickly eclipsed by the efficiency, effectiveness & precision of the engineered CRISPR-Cas9 system..first harnessed for mammalian genome editing by Feng Zhang of Broad Institute & MIT.

The CRISPR system

Like zinc fingers & TALEs, CRISPR systems are natural products. However CRISPR-Cas differs from zinc fingers & TALEs in one crucial aspect that makes it superior for genome editing applications: whereas zinc fingers & TALEs bind to DNA through a direct protein-DNA interaction, requiring the protein to be redesigned for each new target DNA site, CRISPR-Cas achieves target specificity through a small RNA that can easily be swapped for other RNAs targeting new sites.

In nature CRISPR-Cas systems help bacteria defend against attacking viruses (known as bacteriophage or just phage). They consist of two components, the CRISPR (clustered, regularly interspaced palindromic repeats) array & Cas (CRISPR-associated proteins).

CRISPR sequences bookend short stretches of DNA that bacteria have copied from invading phages, preserving a memory of the viruses that have attacked them in the past. These sequences are then transcribed into short RNAs that guide Cas proteins to matching viral sequences. The Cas proteins destroy the matching viral DNA by cutting it.

Engineering the CRISPR toolbox

In early 2011 Feng Zhang..realised..a single RNA-guided protein could be a game changer in genome editing technology.. This system could target & activate genes in mammalian genomes.

Zhang & his team focused on harnessing CRISPR-Cas9 for use in human cells..the most-cited CRISPR paper (Cong et al Science 2013).. essentially achieving “find & replace” functionality in the human genome.

In Sept 2015 Zhang & partners described a different system Cpf1. The Cpf1 system is simpler.. it requires only a single RNA. The Cpf1 enzyme is also smaller than the standard SpCas9 making it easier to deliver into cells & tissues.

The Cas9 has been modified so that instead of cutting the target DNA, it can turn gene expression on by recruiting transcriptional activators to its genomic location (Konermann et al Nature 2014).

At the Broad Institute the system has.. been used for genome-wide screening.. for cancer drugs & dissect immune regulatory networks (&) rapidly create mouse models of cancer that arise from multiple gene alterations (Platt et al Cell 2014).

The Zhang lab has trained thousands of researchers in the use of CRISPR-Cas9 genome editing technology.. & by sharing more than 40,000 CRISPR-Cas9 components.. In Sept 2015 the Zhang lab also began to share Cpf1 components.
