The nervous system is one harmonious network with two settings: a day setting and a night setting, an action setting and a rest setting, sympathetic and parasympathetic.
It is your perception that flips the switch.
Your mind is constantly processing incoming information from your surroundings.
Your subconscious mind makes an automatic assessment of a potentially threatening situation 7 seconds before your conscious mind is aware a decision has been made.
This automatic response mechanism is vital for survival.
When a Conflict occurs or a threat is present the body shifts into a state of sympathetic activity.
In this state, adaptations are made a cellular level to improve your ability to survive.
Adaptation will continue to take place until the subconscious mind is set at ease and knows the surroundings are safe.
But what if your conscious mind is constantly active with thoughts of fear, anxiety, and worry long after the actual danger is gone?
Your body will persist in the adapted state until it knows you are safe and the threat is gone.
Any treatment, cure, therapy, etc. that adds stress, fear, or worry promotes further adaptation and more sympathetic activity.
