Dear community,
About two years ago, Apple released the beta version of macOS Mojave. One of its exciting new features was the Dynamic Wallpaper, a background that would change its appearance during the day. People were fascinated and quickly wanted to create their own versions – of course that included us. It didn't take too long before the corresponding meta data in Apple's HEIC files was discovered and people experimented with generating creative new backdrops.
But the creation was not easy, and even later on, when Apps were available, one big issue still wasn't solved: sharing the community's great creations. When we first came up with the idea for Dynamic Wallpaper Club, we wanted to address both of these issues: 1. An easy and understandable way to create a dynamic wallpaper and 2. The possibility to share what you have created.
We spent many hours prototyping the experience, developing, testing, and during January 2019 we were finally able to share a public beta. We used the early feedback to further improve the website, excited with the vision to make a great tool for everyone. The whole project was – and still is – driven by our enthusiasm for the dynamic wallpaper format and the excitement to see what creations everyone out there can come up with.
Finally, on 23. June 2019, we launched the official version of our website; Thanks to everyone who made that launch a special moment (and helped us to become the product of the day on producthunt 🙂 - https://www.producthunt.com/posts/dynamic-wallpaper-club-2 )! We were really happy to see the page take off and the gallery of wallpapers grow and grow. Also it was awesome to see our page featured on so many blogs! Everything went great, and during the last year the user base kept growing and growing.
We have never placed any ads on our website. We did never track any user information or collect any personal data. We never charged anything for any function or any part of the website. It feels strange to say it so clearly, but unfortunately this is far from the standard nowadays. This page was truly free and completely paid for by our money and idealism. But we think this was the right thing to do – sharing freely and openly is one of the cornerstones of the internet.
This leads us to the current day. While the user numbers were constantly growing, so was the cost: we have one server running only for the wallpaper generation (this has to be a Mac server), one server running the frontend and lastly a huge firebase project in the background, handling all the generation tasks and saving all wallpapers. Unfortunately, HEIC wallpapers are not exactly small – they are easily around 150mb per file, and generate huge amounts of traffic. While the monthly cost kept increasing, we were still confident we could handle it.
During the last two weeks, we saw an explosion in downloads. This is both a great and a not so great thing. On the one hand people obviously love the wallpapers on our site but on the other hand our costs also exploded. For the last two weeks we had daily server costs of around 100€, meaning in this two weeks alone we already accumulated a cost of 1400€.
This is far more than we can spend on this project. We have made the very hard decision to slowly roll out ads on the page where we feel that it's not too obstructive. We will evaluate this step towards funding the platform in the coming weeks and decide by the end of August how to proceed. We hope that you will understand our decision.
While maintaining the platform and covering its costs is one thing, we are also looking for a more sustainable funding model. We are open for sponsorships, collaborations and investments as long as it is coherent with our vision and ideals.
Keep on making great wallpapers!
All the Best,
Felix, Valentin & Grischa
