*Coworkers didn't like that I leave 3 hours early. Say goodbye to your sleep in.*
I use to work in a small start up dot com downtown of about 10 employees (all young adults, with no kids) and a few Bosses. I lived in the burbs, so with rush hour traffic, it was a long drive. I made an arrangement with my boss that I could come in at 7 am and leave at 3. The rest of the staff usually came in at 10 and left at 6. As we were a young dot com of creative folks, flexible hours were fine. This was amazing. I had 3 hours to focus on my work without the bussle of other folks in our open concept office. I was also in 3 hours before our secretary, so I was there to answer the phone til they came in. After a few months of this, the other staff started to complain to my boss that it was unfair that I left at 3 while they all 'had to' stay til 6. He told them why, but they still found it unfair. They were allowed to come in earlier if they wanted, but they all liked to sleep in. They also all too a hourly smoke break. After enough complaints, my boss asked I could come in at 10 as well. I wasn't happy about it, but he asked as a favour to keep office peace. He was a good boss, so I complied. I was grumpy that I had to accommodate everyone else's hours, even though it didn't impact any of the work. I was also grumpy they took off for 10 min every hour or two while I stayed at my desk. So, on top of rolling in at 10 am, I started taking a 'tea break'. When they went out for their cigarette, I'd go too and sip my tea and hang out. A week or so into this new time arrangement, our CEO, (whom my boss didn't update about the shift, thinking it wasn't important to bother him with), noticed that no one was answering the phone before 10 am. He also was put off that the office was empty til 10 am. He also was unhappy about a mass exodus every hour. The CEO asks me why I am no longer in early. I tell him, as unbiased as I can, the reason. An hour later there is an office wide announcement email from the CEO stating that all staff need to be in the office by 830 am, and smoke breaks were limited to every 3 hours. Those a-holes all shot themselves in the foot just because me leaving at 3 pm was 'unfair'. submitted by /u/georgiemaebbw to r/MaliciousCompliance [link] [comments]
