Oktober 1909 in Villemomble, einer französischen Gemeinde nahe Paris, als jüngste von fünf Kindern geboren. Dem Diplom in Chemie 1929 an der Ecole d´Enseignement Technique Feminine in Paris folgte eine Tätigkeit am Radiuminstitut, davon bis 1934 als Assistentin von Marie Curie, der einzigen Person, die es je geschafft hat, zwei Nobelpreise in zwei unterschiedlichen Disziplinen, nämlich Chemie und Physik, zu erhalten.Die Entdeckung des Franciums1939 entdeckte und isolierte Perey das bis dato letzte natürlich vorkommende Element, das radioaktive Alkalimetall Francium (benannt nach ihrem Geburtsland Frankreich) – Ordnungszahl 87 im Periodensystem: https://www.phywe.de/de/online-periodensystem. Nach Astat ist Francium, mit schätzungsweise 30 bis 50 Gramm in der gesamten Erdrinde, das zweitseltenste Element der Erde. Es entsteht als Zerfallsprodukt des Actiniums (Ordnungszahl 89) und weist nur instabile Isotope auf. Gerade mal 21,8 Minuten beträgt die Halbwertszeit des langlebigsten Isotops 223Fr. Aufgrund dieser Tatsache und weil es zur Herstellung keine effiziente Kernreaktion gibt, kann Francium nicht in großen Mengen hergestellt werden.Durch die Abgabe von Protonen entsteht das chemische Element Francium aus Actinium. Der Kern eines radioaktiven Actinium-Isotops sendet ein Alphateilchen aus, ein zweifach positiv geladenes Teilchen aus zwei Protonen und Neutronen. Daher handelt es sich bei Alphastrahlung auch um eine Teilchenstrahlung. Durch die Abgabe der Protonen entsteht somit ein anderes chemisches Element, wie in diesem Fall das Francium.Höhen und Tiefen prägten ihren weiteren LebenswegMarguerite Perey promovierte 1946 an der Pariser Universität Sorbonne und übernahm anschließend die Leitung des Radiuminstituts bis sie 1949 einen Ruf für den Lehrstuhl Radiochemie an der Universität Straßburg erhielt.1960 erhielt sie die Diagnose Knochenkrebs – eine Folge der radioaktiven Strahlung, der sie während ihrer Zeit am Radiuminstitut oftmals ausgesetzt war. Im Rahmen der Erkrankung verlor sie eine Hand und ihr Augenlicht.Als erste Frau wurde sie am 12. März 1962 in die Académie des sciences als korrespondierendes Mitglied (Mitglied, dessen Wohnsitz überall auf der Welt sein kann) aufgenommen.   Mehrfach ausgezeichnetZudem erhielt sie zahlreiche Preise, zum Beispiel wurde sie Offizier der Ehrenlegion (französischer Verdienstorden) und Kommandeur des Ordre national du Mérite (nationaler Verdienstorden Frankreichs), sie bekam den Lavoisier Preis der Académie des sciences und wurde mit der Silbermedaille der französischen chemischen Gesellschaft ausgezeichnet.Marguerite Perey starb am 13.
