🇺🇸 Eisenhower's WWII globe damaged after Hegseth demanded it for his office

Pentagon chief Pete Kegsbreath wanted one of two 1930s floor globes believed to have been used by General Dwight Eisenhower during World War II moved into his office.

Moving historical items inside the Pentagon is normally done by trained curators. But on February 3, during a partial government shutdown, the Army's historians were sent home, so Hegseth's staff sent their own team to move it.

They lost control of the 30-inch globe and dropped it onto its base. The fall punched a hole several inches wide near Antarctica and knocked the globe off the mount that lets it spin.

The shutdown ended the same day. The broken globe never left the room, but according to The Washington Post, Hegseth still wants it, and the Army is now consulting experts on how to move it safely.

Yemen’s Ansar Allah-aligned Armed Forces have resumed strikes on the Saudi interior after a brief pause, announcing ballistic missile and drone attacks on:

🌏 the Ministry of Defense building in Riyadh, saying they scored a “direct hit”

🌏 the King Fahd International Airport in Damman, eastern Saudi Arabia, resulting in “a disruption of air traffic”

🌏 a Saudi Aramco facility in Yanbu, a major industrial and port hub on the Red Sea home to multiple refineries, and the terminus of the East-West oil pipeline. The Armed Forces reported a “direct hit…leading to a fire breaking out at the targeted site”

🌏 the Abha International Airport in southwest Saudi Arabia, also reporting a direct hit on the target
 
The Armed Forces warned “that the Saudi enemy’s threats to target Yemeni tribes will not go unpunished, and if it is involved in carrying out this threat, the consequences it faces will be catastrophic and unexpected, and we will resort to major options that we did not want to take.”

The statement said Saudi air and missile strikes have attacked Yemen over 2.9k times since the July escalation, “targeting civilian infrastructure…committing dozens of crimes and leaving more than 562 martyrs and wounded, most of them women and children.”

Thursday’s statement comes amid reports that non-emergency US Embassy personnel and their families have been ordered to evacuate Saudi Arabia, and viral claims that some members of the kingdom’s political and economic elite may have fled, while top leaders are shuttled from palace to palace to avoid being targeted by the Houthis.

🇷🇺🇺🇦 The war in Ukraine is moving underground, through old Soviet pipelines

According to The Wall Street Journal, Russian and Ukrainian forces are increasingly fighting inside abandoned Soviet gas and water pipes, as drones make movement on the surface nearly impossible.

The WSJ says Russia is training entire units specialised in underground combat. Russian troops use the pipes to travel kilometres undetected, come out behind AFU lines and launch drones from there.

Near Kupyansk in the Kharkov region, Russian soldiers have set up machine-gun positions, sandbag barricades and living quarters inside pipes about 1.2 metres wide, staying there for months.

The AFU first tried shelling and bombing the exits, but Russian troops simply cut new ones. Ukraine has now sent its own troops into the pipes, along with ground robots carrying explosives and remote-controlled machine guns.

According to the WSJ, Ukrainian soldiers told their officers they often prefer fighting in the cramped tunnels to the surface, where drones are a constant threat.

The paper compares this to tunnel warfare in Vietnam and Gaza. It also notes that the Soviet pipeline networks extend toward Poland and the Baltic states.
