Here’s some insight into the TV biz and my take on why ABC was thrilled to find an excuse to get Jimmy Kimmel’s show off the airwaves.

First: Jimmy spent a few days making some partisan and distasteful jokes that helped tank ratings.

Then: The FCC chair went on a podcast and threatened to violate the First Amendment and go after broadcasters if Jimmy keeps up his “news distorting” jokes.

The backstory: Jimmy put ABC in a bad spot financially. Jimmy’s ratings were rock bottom, and his salary was pricy! $15mil?? With his worst ratings yet in August? But they were locked into a contract with Jimmy and couldn’t just get rid of him.

An FCC threat? Perfect excuse to bend the contract, ditch Jimmy, and try to resuscitate ratings.

I disliked the way the FCC chair talked about controlling speech.

But the Trump admin did’t shut down Jimmy’s show. ABC did what outlets have done since the beginning of TV: stop airing a show that has low ratings.

I’ve always said the story of David in the Bible is one of the greatest plot lines of all time.
