🇫🇷 Emmanuel Macron called for calm after the riots, saying nothing can justify the violence and destruction across France.

He said young people have legitimate fears about their future and pointed to the rising cost of living and fuel prices, which he linked to the war in the Persian Gulf that France did not take part in.

Macron stressed that peaceful protesters with legitimate demands must not be confused with those who rioted, looted and destroyed.

“How can French people do this to France?” he asked.

He announced several measures:

- A crisis unit led by the Prime Minister to speed up aid and recovery
- A review of intelligence and policing failures
- Tough prosecutions, with looters forced to pay for the damage
- Powers for prefects and mayors to ban certain gatherings
- Talks with political parties, unions, students and other groups
