Ellen Greenberg case (2011) will take down PA Governor Josh Shapiro:

27-year-old Jewish Philadelphia teacher found dead in her apartment with 20–23 stab wounds (many clustered in the back of the neck/head), a knife lodged in her chest, and dozens of bruises of varying ages. Her fiancé Samuel Goldberg (also Jewish) claimed he broke in after being locked out and found her. Police/ME initially ruled homicide, then quickly switched to suicide after a closed-door meeting, citing her anxiety history.

Forensic problems with suicide ruling: Independent experts (including original ME Dr. Marlon Osbourne in his 2025 reversal, Dr. Cyril Wecht, neuropathologist Dr. Wayne Ross, and biomechanical analysts) conclude it was homicide. The attached diagram highlights the core issue—posterior neck wounds with trajectories and force inconsistent with self-infliction. At least one wound was post-mortem (no vital reaction). Neck bruising suggests strangulation preceded the stabs. Scene was compromised early: Goldberg’s uncle, prominent Judge James Schwartzman (high Philadelphia legal position), removed electronics/laptop before full police warrant, breaking chain of custody; the apartment was cleaned the next day.

Shapiro’s role: As PA Attorney General, his office reviewed the case (referred by DA Krasner), affirmed the suicide ruling after years of work, and effectively closed it. In 2022, after public exposure of donor and social/educational network ties (shared elite Jewish school circles, campaign contributions from Schwartzman/Goldberg family), the office cited “appearance of conflict” and referred it to Chester County DA. That is the “closed twice” element.

Current status (July 2026): Official ruling remains suicide despite Osbourne’s reversal and added wounds documented in 2025 reviews. A federal US Attorney probe (launched ~Jan 2026) is examining how Philadelphia agencies—including Shapiro’s former AG office—handled the case, focusing on potential corruption or obstruction in protecting the suicide narrative.

Why it risks taking down Shapiro: Game-theoretically, the suicide ruling was the lowest-friction political fix that shielded connected parties (fiancé’s family with donor and network access) from a full homicide investigation in a brutal stabbing of a young teacher. Shapiro’s office sustained that narrative amid the ties, then pivoted only under pressure. The federal probe bypasses local protection and can expose whether political calculus, not evidence, drove decisions on his watch. It directly undercuts his institutionalist image—especially while he campaigns on schools and education—by keeping alive a credible story of elite network cover-up in a high-profile Philly case. Forensics and expert reversals make the original ruling indefensible; the connections and early evidence handling by a sitting judge make protection the most coherent explanation. This stays a live liability with real accountability potential.
