Abdulrahman Mohamed El-Sayed won the Democratic primary for U.S. Senate in Michigan on August 4, 2026. He narrowly [FAKE VOTES] defeated Rep. Haley Stevens. Unofficial results with nearly all votes counted showed him at roughly 48.5% to Stevens’s 47.5%—a margin of about 15,000 votes out of more than 1.5 million cast. State Sen. Mallory McMorrow (who had withdrawn but remained on the ballot) took about 4%. Stevens conceded and offered support. El-Sayed will face Republican former Rep. Mike Rogers in November for the seat being vacated by retiring Sen. Gary Peters.

Multiple outlets (AP, CNN, NBC, etc.) projected the win the morning of August 5 after a tight overnight count. The race was the most expensive Democratic Senate primary on record, with tens of millions spent (much of it against El-Sayed from establishment and pro-Israel groups). Polls had shown him leading more comfortably; the final margin was tighter than expected.

Born October 31, 1984, in Rochester Hills, Michigan (Detroit suburbs) to Egyptian immigrant parents. His father, Mohamed, came to the U.S. to study engineering at Wayne State University; El-Sayed was raised in the Detroit area largely by his father and American stepmother Jacqueline (from rural Michigan). He spent summers in Egypt with family. He is Muslim.

Education and career: University of Michigan (BS with highest distinction; played lacrosse), Rhodes Scholar at Oxford (doctorate in public health), MD from Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons. He became Detroit’s health director (and health officer) at a young age (2015–2017), later held Wayne County public-health roles, authored books on public health and Medicare for All, and hosts a podcast. He ran for Michigan governor in 2018 as a progressive insurgent and lost badly to Gretchen Whitmer. He lives in Ann Arbor with his wife Sarah Jukaku and their two daughters.

Important credential note: He holds an MD and often brands himself a “physician” and “doctor.” He has never held a medical license in Michigan or New York, never completed a residency, and his hands-on clinical experience appears limited to a short medical-school sub-internship (which he once described as “cosplaying a doctor”). State laws restrict use of the title “physician” without licensure; critics treat the repeated self-description as misleading marketing.

Views and Record
El-Sayed runs as a left-wing progressive/populist. Core platform elements that draw the “extreme” label from critics:
Medicare for All / single-payer as a central plank, framed as taking on pharma and corporate power.

End (or sharply curtail) U.S. military aid and arms to Israel. He has repeatedly called Israel’s conduct in Gaza a “genocide,” described the Israeli government as “evil” in the same breath as Hamas, rejected the idea of Israel as an ethno-state, and blamed AIPAC for distorting U.S. policy (including linking it to conflicts with Iran). He has said he would end military assistance to Israel, Jordan, Saudi Arabia, and Egypt.

Abolish ICE, describing it as a paramilitary force “corrupted at its soul” that cannot be reformed.

Past explicit support for the “defund the police” framing (2020 social-media posts calling police “standing armies” and arguing cities spend far too much on policing poverty versus social services). He later deleted many of those posts and now softens the language to reinvestment in social services while claiming he never truly sought to abolish local policing.

Campaign-finance overhaul (“get money out of politics”), higher taxes on the wealthy, strong labor/union emphasis, and skepticism of corporate power.
He is not a formal Democratic Socialists of America member but has been heavily backed by the progressive left (Bernie Sanders, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, Rashida Tlaib, and others). Russian President Vladimir Putin signed Russia’s first comprehensive law regulating digital currencies and digital rights on August 4, 2026 (reported via TASS and multiple outlets including Xinhua, bne IntelliNews, and others). Core provisions take effect September 1, 2026, with a transition period for exchanges and related rules running into 2027.

What the law actually does
It creates a tightly controlled, Central Bank-supervised framework rather than open legalization:

Crypto exchanges, brokers, digital depositories, and related intermediaries must eventually operate only if listed in a special registry. Minimum capital for exchanges is 15 million rubles (roughly $186,000–$187,000). Transition period allows unregistered operation until July 1, 2027.

Retail (non-qualified) investors: Can buy only the “most liquid” cryptocurrencies through licensed intermediaries after a suitability test, with a hard annual cap of 300,000 rubles (~$3,700) per intermediary. This is regulation and channeling of an already-active market into state-supervised rails, not a free-for-all endorsement of crypto. Retail participation is deliberately constrained; the real operational opening is for institutional/cross-border use.

Is it specifically “bullish for $XRP”?
The law itself does not single out XRP (or any individual asset beyond the general “most liquid” criteria for retail). Claims framing the signing as uniquely crushing other coins in favor of XRP are hype, not the text of the statute.

That said, there are concrete, non-speculative points of relevance for XRP:

XRP already had a foothold in Russia’s regulated infrastructure via the Moscow Exchange (MOEX) Digital Financial Assets ecosystem, including related indices and products, before the full law took effect. This gives it an earlier institutional presence than assets starting from zero under the new licensing regime.

The law’s clearest practical opening—unlimited use for cross-border trade settlements by exporters/importers—aligns with XRPL’s design focus on fast, low-cost value transfer across borders and currencies. Russia has repeatedly sought non-SWIFT alternatives under sanctions pressure; regulated crypto rails for foreign trade are part of that effort.

Non-mineable assets face different pressures than energy-intensive proof-of-work coins (Russia has expanded mining restrictions in certain regions). XRP’s consensus model does not compete on the same energy footprint.
