On August 14, 2026, a federal jury in Albuquerque convicted former New Mexico House Majority Leader Sheryl Williams Stapleton (Democrat, District 19) on 31 felony charges. Co-defendant Joseph Johnson was convicted on 28.
The scheme (2013–2020/21):
While serving as both a state legislator and Albuquerque Public Schools (APS) Career/Technical Education and Perkins Project director, Stapleton directed roughly $3.25 million (mostly federal Perkins vocational education funds) to Robotics Management Learning Systems, owned by her longtime friend Johnson.
In return, she received approximately $1.15 million in kickbacks by writing ~234 blank company checks to her own consulting firm, her family’s restaurant, a nonprofit they controlled, and personal expenses (including home renovations). She also failed to report the income on her taxes.
Both were found guilty on all counts presented (conspiracy, bribery, mail fraud, money laundering, tax fraud). They remain free pending sentencing (expected within 90 days). Stapleton still faces separate state racketeering and related charges set for trial in October 2026.
