Digital ID

Status: EUROPE

Electronic ID: eIDAS 2.0 is a binding EU regulation that creates interoperable digital iD system for all 27 member states.
Digital Wallet: National ID for all countries based on "EUDI Wallet" by end of 2026; allowing for cross-border verification.
Mandatory requirement?: The wallet is voluntary for citizens but all big businesses (including big online platforms) are required to accept it by 2027.


Notes:

Estonia - mandatory ID card since 2002 (storing personal data and fingerprints). Used for over 600 services. Digital ID app (Eesti) now rolling out to replace the initial ID card. The card/ digital ID is mandatory; no rights given to citizens without it.

Denmark - "MitID" - 97% adoption - all citizens receive a digital mailbox and receive all govt correspondence through this. MitID is used for banks, insurance companies, energy companies, doctors appointments, job applications, age verification etc.

Europe is said to be on track to have a fully integrated and interoperable digital ID system across the continent by 2030.

Notes:

The REAL ID Act created uniform standards for state-issued ID's.

REAL ID's needed for domestic travel since May 2025.

REAL ID's do not require a digital component but several states require biometrics in order to renew an ID eg California, Texas, Illinois, Washington.

Millions of citizens now enrolled in a biometric ID system.

The Secure Technology Alliance tracks progress of state mDL interoperability, with goal of all states using ISO /IEC 18013-5 compatible with eIDAS 2.0 as standard.

States including Colorado, Iowa and New York have apps that businesses can use to verify mDL's for retail purposes.

Digital Wallet: UK Gov Wallet (hosts many tokens including Britcard , Veterans Card, Digital Driving License etc)
Mandatory requirement?: Currently by 2029 for the right to work. Company Directors from 18th November 2025.
Biometric Backing: Facial Recognition.
Standard: eIDAS Compatible (W3C VC)

Timeline:

Starmer announced work requirement for digital ID in 2025.

Driving licence verification suggested for late 2025.

Currently all central govt depts must accept Digital ID by end of 2027.

The Gov.UK One Login is already live for govt sites and will later be offered to third parties (banks, social media) in order to verify identity on demand.

One Login is required from 18 November 2025 for company directors (https://t.me/lawyersoflight/17306)

Govt frames the scheme as a response to illegal immigration and a way to protect borders.

Same govt has spent £1.3 billion (2024-25) to house asylum seekers in hotels.

Enrolment does not currently require a smartphone, citizens can register through other channels such as ID renewals.

Digital ID: Human Rights Abuses

"Once the key components of Digital Public Infrastructure are set, digital identity, digital payments, and data sharing – it opens the door to human rights abuses on a level never seen before.

China’s Social Credit System (SCS), announced in 2014 rates Chinese citizens, companies, organisations, and govt entities, based on "legal, moral and ethical standards".

It collects data from online shopping, speech, and govt interaction and generally searches the internet to identify Chinese citizens to be put on blacklists.

The Supreme Courts blacklist of “discredited” or “unworthy” persons can be found online and is publicly searchable by all.

Blacklisted people are unable to board planes, trains, and are banned from big purchases including private school for their kids.

In 2018, the SCS banned 17.5 million flight purchases and 5.5m train tickets.

China has also been shown to use its Covid control infrastructure to silence protests; in 2022 – bank protestors had their health passes “turn red” which prevented them from travelling on the day of the protest."

Digital ID - GENERAL SOLUTIONS

"The digital ID problem is universal and is not going away. Those who object to the program must object against the many stages that get us there, namely electronic ID's and biometric collection. They may also have to sacrifice the accessibility of goods and services if these are put behind a wall.

General Solutions :
Preparation is the best policy; ensure you set yourself up with food, trade and community systems that have no reliance on digital systems. Activities may include:

1. Practicing peer to peer cash or barter transactions.
2. Building formal lending circles.
3. Strengthen relationships with trusted intermediaries who may assist with financial transactions; or even Digital ID participants willing to assist you down the line.

Always Opt Out
This seems obvious but will depend on the context, opting out may look like:

1. Rejecting biometric capture.
2. Neglect to bring a phone or compatible phone.
3. Speaking to a supervisor.
4. Avoiding offices with biometric and Digital ID infrastructure and searching for rural offices.

Social Pushback
The more your friends and neighbours are off the Digital ID system the better - so start spreading the word. Share the report linked below

Technology:

"Digital ID may only work on mainstream devices according to Digital ID frameworks, and this is expanding to more banking apps.
One way you can completely opt out from Digital ID is to use a phone that doesn't support it.
Use alternative de-googled operating systems like GrapheneOS or LineageOS.
Use open-source Linux based computers.

Banking
When Digital ID becomes available to private entities for integration, only a limited amount of time remains before stored funds are inaccessible. Responsible activities during this process may include:

1. Stay on top of your country's federal and local laws to be aware of changes and deadlines.
2. Expand your search to find Credit Unions or Community Banks that may have exemptions.
3. Experiment with cryptocurrency and search for instant exchanges, peer-to-peer marketplaces and decentralised exchanges.
4. Open a dialogue with the bank and apply social pressure to remove biometric checks.
5. Open an account with a bank card tied to gold/ silver :https://member.upma.org/#/auth/login . Not this bank has its won biometric verification when withdrawing funds by bank transfer.

Travel
Many countries have implemented biometric border checks for foreigners. There may be legal ways to cross the border without enrolling in the biometric system,however this is a time sensitive matter as checkpoints will become more standardised over time.

1. Stay on top of travel laws that are important to you.
2. Travel first to a country without a biometric entry/ exit system and find a path from there.
3 Smaller is better, travel to smaller airports and points of crossing
4. Purchase tickets in person to avoid advance digital screening."
