Sometimes I need to be spiritual & one thing I’ve always loved is bikes. I can’t ride with any great skill, but I’m still alive after 44 years of twisting the grip, despite a few pieces of metal I wasn’t born with.
From 30sec in, the utter beauty of a highly skilled rider of courage, literally on the edge of life & death, coupled with the music, makes this a semi religious experience for those of us for whom there’s meaning in the concept of freedom as much as the using of it.
Murakami said “possessing an object which signifies freedom might give more pleasure than actually having the freedom that the object represents”.
I read this a long time ago & I knew immediately why it was that I still possess a bike I’ve owned since 1978 (along with others). In its presence, I’m in Kent in 2021 as an older person, and also a teenager in Munich or in the Swiss alps in the late 70s. The past is as vivid in every sense as the present, but only through the lens of that one object. Nothing else is recalled as vividly from that time. I can even hear the exhaust note as we rolled into a mountain campsite in France one evening. Perhaps that was the most perfect moment of my entire life.
