The Minister of Interior and Municipalities in the Lebanese caretaker government, Judge Bassam Mawlawi, said yesterday (Wednesday) that we will not “allow the random Syrian presence in Lebanon,” demanding a return plan for the displaced within a clear time frame.
According to the German News Agency, Mawlawi said in a press conference today: “We cannot remain in a state of inaction regarding the Syrian presence in Lebanon,” declaring, “We have circulated to all municipalities that we will hold accountable every person who is negligent against his people and his town.” He added: “We will not accept any aid aimed at condoning the presence of any illegal Syrian in Lebanon. Our country is not for sale, and we will not accept any attempt to violate the law in exchange for money.”
He declared that Lebanon's demand “is not to regulate the Syrian presence, but rather to limit the Syrian presence, and we will not accept that Syrian action remains unchecked in all sectors in Lebanon.” Mawlawi continued: “We asked the UNHCR to comply with the protocols signed with Lebanon, and we will not accept violating them.”
