Forces of the de facto authority affiliated with the Damascus government launched a large-scale terrorist and brutal attack, employing heavy and medium weaponry, including tanks, heavy artillery, Grad and Katyusha rocket launchers, mortar shells, and DShK heavy machine guns of various types.

Residential neighborhoods of Sheikh Maqsoud, Ashrafieh, and Bani Zaid.

These areas are densely populated civilian neighborhoods, home to more than 600,000 civilians.

This attack constitutes a grave violation of international humanitarian law, as it involved the deliberate targeting of inhabited civilian areas with weapons of wide destructive capacity.

Between 6–7 January 2026, civilians were killed and injured as a result of heavy shelling carried out against the residential neighborhoods of Sheikh Maqsoud, Ashrafieh, and Bani Zaid by armed factions affiliated with the Damascus government, some of which had previously participated in the coastal and Suwayda massacres.

The bombardment heavily targeted most areas of the three neighborhoods, particularly:

• Furniture Street in Ashrafieh

Dozens of homes and buildings sustained severe damage as a result of artillery shells and rockets directly striking residential structures.
