On October 19, 2017, the Panoramic Telescope and Rapid Response System-1 (Pan-STARRS-1) in Hawaii announced the first detection of an interstellar object called 1I/2017 U1 'Oumuamua (the Hawaiian word for “explorer”) . This object created a lot of confusion among astrophysicists because it looked like an asteroid, but behaved like a comet because of the way it accelerated out of the solar system. Since then, scientists have observed many other objects that behave in the same way, known as dark comets.
