At least twenty human rights organisations have stopped or drastically reduced their cooperation with the International Criminal Court in The Hague since last year because of the sanctions that Trump previously imposed on thirteen (former) employees of the ICC and three Palestinian organisations.

Human Rights Watch has ceased its cooperation. Forensic Architecture is also struggling with the sanctions. ‘We have maintained a working relationship with the ICC’ for more than a decade, says Eyal Weizman, director of Forensic Architecture. ‘We're reconsidering that now.’ Save the Children Netherlands also says it has difficulty finding a new form of collaboration, says director Pim Kraan. ‘We cannot accept the risk of being sanctioned ourselves, and that this will endanger all our other work’, a German NGO told Investico. Many NGOs refuse to speak on record and have quietly stopped working together.

With the so-called anti-boycott regulation, Brussels can prohibit European companies from complying with American sanctions, but this has not yet been put into effect. Prime Minister Rob Jetten will see opportunities for ‘open talks with the US about the ICC in the next six months.

The recently announced sanctions against the entire ICC will come into effect in five months.
