Hamas crackdown.
In 2019, Saudi authorities began mass arrests of Palestinians in the kingdom, eventually detaining 68 people, including students, academics, and businesspeople, over alleged ties to Hamas.
On March 8, 2020, they were brought before the Specialized Criminal Court, Saudi Arabiaβs terrorism court, charged with βjoining a terrorist entityβ and βfinancing terrorism,β in a mass trial with no access to lawyers.
On August 8, 2021, sentences were handed down, with terms ranging from 6 months to 22 years.
The most prominent detainee, Mohammed al-Khudari, Hamasβs former official representative in Saudi Arabia, was sentenced to 15 years in prison.
Al-Khudari and his son Hani were both held past the end of their sentences. According to Amnesty International, both should have been released on February 28, 2022. Mohammed was finally released in October 2022, seven months after his sentence had expired, and deported to Jordan.
Amnesty International documented that Mohammed al-Khudari and his son Hani were subjected to serious human rights violations, including enforced disappearance, arbitrary detention, incommunicado detention, solitary confinement, interrogation without their lawyers present, and denial of adequate medical care.

There will be no new Arab Spring.
The conditions that led to the Arab Spring have only multiplied.
And if Bouazizi was one man who set himself on fire, today, across the Arab states, there are many Bouazizis setting themselves on fire or gambling with their lives in the Mediterranean for a chance to reach Europe.
Just yesterday, a 62-year-old Tunisian woman who made a living selling goods from a small street stall set herself on fire outside the governorate building in Sidi Bouzid, after police assaulted her husband. (Video)
And today, 42-year-old Wahbi al-Khadrawi, a father of two, died after spending 10 days at the Severe Burns Hospital in Ben Arous from setting himself on fire inside the Mohammedia district headquarters in protest over the refusal to grant him a medical treatment card despite his repeated requests.
His family said people were prevented from filming the incident and that his wife was prevented from visiting him. (Photo)
And this is just in Tunisia, and just this week.
There wonβt be a new Arab Spring, but something far worse for the regimes that created these catastrophic conditions on every level.
