On October 29, 2000, an AP photographer captured an image of 14-year-old Palestinian Faris Odeh standing in front of an Israeli tank, confronting it with a stone near al-Muntar Junction in Gaza.
On November 8, 2000, Israeli army soldiers shot and killed him with a bullet to the neck at the same location while he was confronting them with stones
The late Egyptian writer Radwa Ashour described Faris in her novel “A Piece of Europe” as a child who loved dabke dancing and singing.
She wrote that he was singing even while confronting the tank:

Civil Defense rescuers found her on a tree branch and took her to Al-Shifa Hospital.

After a month without any information about her identity or family, nurse Amal Ismail took her into her care, named her Malak (means Angel) and chose October 29 as her birthday.
