AI hallucination almost started a war with China:

According to CNN, an AI chatbot hallucination led the US military to prepare to intercept a Chinese ship after falsely identifying its cargo as nuclear-weapons components and almost started a war with China.

Officials caught the error just before the planned operation, averting a potentially dangerous confrontation.

The Fed knew Silicon Valley Bank was in serious trouble a year before it collapsed.

A new Fed commissioned review found that supervisors knew, or should have known, about major problems at SVB as early as March 2022.

SVB had grown into a $209 billion bank, while an incredible 94% of its deposits were uninsured.

The bank was also sitting on huge unrealized losses and was not properly prepared to access emergency Fed funding if depositors suddenly wanted their money back.

Regulators saw these risks, but they still didn’t force SVB to fix them quickly enough.

The new review says a "culture of risk aversion" inside the Fed contributed to the delays.

Bowman says staff believed it was personally safer to take no action unless they were completely certain their action was right.

The review found regulators could have anticipated the problems and intervened earlier, potentially preventing the bank’s failure.

Then the exact risk they were worried about happened.

Customers tried to withdraw $42 billion in a single day, with roughly another $100 billion expected to leave the following day.

SVB collapsed in March 2023, shareholders were wiped out, and the government stepped in to protect depositors and contain panic across the banking system.

How long should a radio transmission actually be?

Fifteen seconds. Twenty is the absolute ceiling. Count that out loud sometime — it's barely a sentence and a confirmation, and most operators blow past it before they've finished saying hello.

The reason is mechanical. Direction finding needs your carrier present long enough for a station to take a bearing, and it takes several stations doing that at once before their lines cross into a position. A short over gives them one bearing and nothing to cross it with. You're not hiding the transmission — you're making it too brief to be useful.

There's a checklist for what gets extracted from intercepted traffic, and it has a name worth memorising: SELDOM UP. Strength, Equipment, Logistics, Disposition, Organization, Movement, Units, Personalities. None of it has to be said deliberately to be given away.

Some habits hand it over for free. Tuning and testing on air broadcasts your position with no message attached at all. Chatting between operators builds a pattern of life. Using your own name is the easiest entry point there is. Calling when the net has been silent tells them something just changed.

The fix is unglamorous: write the message out before you key, strip everything that isn't needed, then read it once. The pauses and the corrections are where your twenty seconds actually go.

And a correction to how most people rank this. Encryption is the third line of defence, not the first. Before it come not transmitting at all, and transmitting briefly. If they can't read you, they still know you're there — and they can jam you or come find you instead.
