Where should you actually put a field antenna?

Not on the ridge. That's the counterintuitive part, because the ridge is where the radio works best — clean path in every direction, nothing in the way. Doctrine is blunt about the cost: an antenna on the ridge line gives enemy observation and fire an aiming stake.

The fix is the military crest. Move down the forward slope until the skyline sits behind you instead of around you. You keep most of your path to the distant station and lose the silhouette that marks it.

Better still, put the hill between you and the threat. Terrain blocks radiation, not just observation. On the reverse slope the mass soaks up everything heading toward hostile direction-finding while your own signal still gets out — which works particularly well with NVIS, where the useful path goes up rather than sideways.

Why it matters: a located transmitter isn't just a jamming target. A fix lets a threat jam your receivers, listen to your traffic, learn your transmission times and battle rhythm, or simply target the grid square.

But don't overcorrect. Doctrine is equally blunt the other way — a thoroughly concealed site that prevents communications is worthless. Bury yourself in a deep ravine and nobody finds you, because nobody hears you either.

Terrain isn't the only variable. Damp ground reaches further than dry, rocky ground, and fresh water nearby helps. Keep clear of power lines, steel bridges, tunnels and busy roads — they absorb RF energy and inject electrical noise. Under trees, a horizontal wire outperforms a vertical whip.

Antenna siting sits where radio propagation, terrain analysis and emission control meet. It's a targeting decision as much as a technical one.

Two full nights of digging. Fourteen days inside. Nine square metres for four men, and not enough headroom to stand up.

A covered observation hide is one of the oldest tools in #reconnaissance, and one of the least glamorous. You dig a hole roughly 130 to 140 centimetres deep, roof it with rough timber, bury it, and then live in it.

The building is the hard part. Two nights, and most of that isn't the digging — it's moving the spoil. Freshly turned subsoil is pale, and pale earth is visible at night. Every shovelful gets carried away in rucksacks, sandbags, whatever holds weight, then scattered thin somewhere else and dusted over. Leave a heap and the whole position is worthless before anyone has occupied it.

What you get for that work is a slot. A gap a few centimetres high between the roof timbers and the lip of the earth, and through it, a letterbox view of everything you were sent to watch. The optics stay back in the shadow — a lens pushed into daylight catches the sun and undoes two nights of work.

Inside, it's shifts. Two men working the radio in rotation while two more trade off on the slot, around the clock. Nobody sleeps through a night. The floor is trodden soil, the ceiling is close enough to touch lying down, and there is no free space to move past each other.

And everything stays. Rations, batteries, packaging — and human waste, sealed in gelling pouches and kept in the corner until you leave. Nothing gets buried, because buried things get found. The stack of unused pouches in the corner is its own kind of clock: when they run low, so does your time on target.

Then you fill it in, scatter the timber, put the ground cover back, and walk away leaving a patch of forest floor that's very slightly darker than the ground around it. That's the best result available.

Why go through all of it? Because aerial reconnaissance gives you a moment. This gives you two weeks — patterns, routines, the difference between a convoy passing once and a convoy passing every night at the same hour.

A #drone sees a moment. This sees two weeks.

A soldier in thermal camouflage was killed after a drone's daylight camera picked him up. The heat sensor had lost him completely.

That single detail explains most of what has changed about hiding on a battlefield.

For a century, concealment meant defeating a human eye. Break your outline, match your background, stay still. Reconnaissance was built on it. Camouflage, hides, movement discipline — all of it assumes that if nobody sees you, you're safe.

Thermal imaging doesn't care what you wear. Colour and pattern mean nothing to a heat sensor; what registers is a warm body against cold ground. Front-line soldiers now say plainly that camouflage matters less than it used to, because thermal drones find you anyway.

The counter exists. Thermal cloaks, ponchos and blankets — layered fabrics with metal filaments that hold body heat in, so the wearer reads as part of the landscape. They work. They're being issued to reconnaissance units, assault groups and sniper teams. The good ones cost up to two thousand dollars apiece, which is why cheaper local versions are being produced, and why hunting ponchos and even camping equipment get used instead.

But every solution answers one sensor.

Optical: shape, outline, movement. Thermal: body heat. Radio: every transmission has a direction. And increasingly, software trained to recognise what a human being looks like from above.

A blanket ticks one box. Whatever is overhead usually carries at least two.

So what replaces invisibility?

Time. Effective detection isn't measured by how far away the threat is — it's measured in the number of seconds you have to do something useful. Which means shorter tasks, faster reporting, more dispersion, and the assumption that concealment buys minutes rather than safety.

Assume you are seen. Then decide what that costs them.

You want to know how many men are in that camp. You will never see them all at once. So you count the latrines instead.

Field sanitation is planned, not improvised. The number of latrines in a camp has a direct numerical relationship to the number of troops being served. Nobody digs more than they need, and nobody digs fewer. That row of structures at the edge of the treeline is a headcount that nobody thought to hide.

The kitchen answers the same question from a different direction. A field kitchen is manned and equipped to feed a specific number of soldiers — not an approximate one. Watch the queue. Then look behind the kitchen at the stack of empty crates, because that pile is a record of how many were fed yesterday, and the day before.

Then there's what people carry. Lightly equipped soldiers moving without packs can be assumed to be close to their operating base. Men heavily laden with packs and equipment are redeploying somewhere new. Same track, same direction, two completely different reports.

And routine. Every army eats on a schedule, and in a particular order. Three sittings instead of one means they feed in shifts — which means they work in shifts, which tells you something about how the position is manned around the clock. Who eats first tells you who is standing guard while the others eat.

None of this is dramatic. It is exactly the kind of seemingly unimportant information that turns into real intelligence — and the kind only someone on the ground can report accurately.

An enemy is hard to find, but not impossible. Habits and habitats leave definite fingerprints.

A camera sees the latrines. Somebody still has to count them.
